I don't know about the Beavs, but the Ducks now could afford playing on the moon with the $100 million Phil Knight just pledged to them.

Geez - if he's got a "spare" $100 million, you'd think he could afford to annex into Beaverton! (inside joke for Portland area people)

I saw a great sign at the Yankee game, tho. It had the Yankee logo in a car mirror and said, "Warning, Boston fans, objects may be closer than they appear." Kind of clever.

And how about this guy from Arizona, Brandon Webb? Friday night, he pitched his third straight shut-out. He's thrown 42 consecutive scoreless innings. He's 18 innings away from breaking Orel Hershiser's record. When a reporter informed of this, Webb responded, "Just two more shutouts? Oh, I should have that no problem. It's in the back pocket," while rolling his eyes.

Gee, Chuckles, you left out the Bobby Jenks story. He tied the MLB record for most consecutive batters retired(41), held by the immortal Jim Barr(who?). The 42nd batter got a hit, ending his chances to set a new record. I'm sure that all of the numerous(4) White Sox fans around are upset that you missed this in your daily report.

And I see that Wiley Mo Pena of Washington just homered for the second straight game. Seeing that Bah-ston is having big trouble with their power stats this year, ya think maybe they could trade for Pena to get a big bat in their lineup? I hear that you got a spare relief pitcher available that ain't doing much.:D

Love story of the week......

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7141730

The young lad arranges with the Jumbotron operator at the Astros game last night to show him getting down on his knees and proposing to his honey. His honey sez "f**k you" and dumps her popcorn on his head before stomping up the aisle and out of the stadium.

It's kinda nice to read a sports story these days with a happy ending, isn't it?

They shut 'em out 5 times out of 9, though.

WOW!

I saw it when the score was 10-3. No idea it was going to get that bad.

Some other intersting tidbits from that game that I heard this morning:

The Baltimore pitching staff went from 7th in the league in team ERA to 11th, in one night!

The Rangers had more runs than outs in the game.

And, finally, just to show how screwy stat rules are, Texas pitcher Wes Littleton earned a save in that game. I can just picture him sitting with his grandkids someday telling them about his close call...

Hey, Mick, what's the story on Craig Monroe? I saw the Tigers traded him to the Cubs today; I know his numbers were down a little from last year, but is it injuries, or just the need for a change of scenery? I was curious, because I thought the Cubs had been trying to get rid of an outfielder or two (Jones), but now they pick up another, even with Soriano ready to come off the DL in a week or so, and the others more than holding their own.

To me, the most fascinating thing: Baltimore led 3-0 going into the fourth quarter.

I didn't see the final stats, but did Baltimore pull the goalie towards the end? That might explain a couple of easy goals by Texas.
