Arbiter And Spam

I have been online with an email address for about ten years now. I seldom had problems with spam in the past, maybe just two or three a month. Our local IAABO board started using the Arbitrer this past season for the first time. Since the season began in December, I'm getting at least five to ten spams a day, usually for things like erectile disfunction medication, mortgage refinancing, and most frequently, stock tips. I haven't changed my online habits regarding using the internet or emailing in any other way. This may just be a coincidence, or it may have something to do with the use of the Arbiter. I've had the same experience after we went to it this past season.

There are permissions in Arbiter that your assignor can set. Our assignor only allows the officials roster to be viewed by other officials. Sounds like your assignor is more liberal.

This is much different here in Indiana. All games are scheduled by the Athletic Directors of the schools, so you will get phone calls, emails, and letters from Athletic directors that need to fill games. You are paid by the school that you are working at that day. Most of the time you receive your check for the game as soon as you walk in the door or at least before the game starts. You can also pick up games from other officials, it is a pretty common for officials to give each other games that they can't work or even trading games can happen. I know a lot of states is all through the Association that you belong too but not here in Southern Indiana, all we do with our Association is pay our dues, attend a few meetings, have a golf event in the summer and a banquet in the Spring. We do have a website where we can post our schedule and Athletic Directors can check there to see if we are open on a certain date. Here in Indiana things are done a little different than other states.

The ADs have no need to contact an individual referee about anything. Thus they don't need to have access to our phone numbers, email addresses, or physical addresses. All changes are made through the association assignors. The schools contact these people and they in turn contact the referees and pass along the needed information.
I don't know how many times I can say this so this will be the last.

What you say applies to *you*. It does not apply to everyone.

The method you use is no better or worse than any other method. If you have to deal with the AD's office then you do it. If not then you don't.

I deal with them and in my experience it's not a big deal.

Oooooo...Dan needs a nap.

Posters are just offering how things are handled differently from place to place. I haven't read where anyone said one way was better than another.

I agree. Dan must be quite tired. He can't even keep track of which poster wrote those words. In fact, I did back in post #10. I can only guess that 181174 attempted to quote me when expressing how things are done in southern Indiana (which I already knew btw ) which he later deleted by editting his message, but Dan got confused and felt compelled to respond yet again.

Perhaps this is a good example of how emails from multiple contacts to an official could lead to confusion.

This happened to me also. This was my first year officiating, and two assignors use the Arbiter, and one uses iSOCS. I thought it was iSOCS that was leaking my information to the spammers, but maybe it was the Arbiter.
