Hand in Net
Is it illegal if a defender's hand gets caught in the net, enough to cause the ring to shift, when the defender doesn't touch rim, or grab the net intentionally. I think the ball was not in the cylinder when the hand caught the net, but it did affect the shot when the ball did get to the rim, if that matters. The people around me at a game today were very unhappy at a no-call on this, but I wasn't sure about the rule, I wasn't rooting for either team, but I just wondered about it.
Incidentally, there was also a play where the L was screened out on a 1-on-1 fast break, and didn't see a pretty obvious double dribble that happened on the other side of the key. The T came in a couple seconds later with the call, and before the original L put the ball in play, he threw a thumbs up sign to his partner, which I thought was neat to see. |

It is basket interference to contact any part of the basket while the ball is on or within the basket. That means that the initial contact which was accidental was okay, but once the ball landed on the ring or fell within the basket, then BI should have been called.
4-6 Basket interference occurs when a player: ART. 1 . . . Touches the ball or any part of the basket (including the net) while the ball is on or within either basket. |
