Time out question

Has anyone ever had a coach call a timeout before the tip off?

Do you mean "request one?" Because an official would not grant it.

yes, and I didn't. He asked for a rule interp. to support why he couldn't. I could think of it off the top of my head.

Just curious - what was the rule interp that was so important, it just had to be made before the game started....?

The original post didn't say he wanted a TO to ask about an interpretation, it said after the TO was denied, he wanted the interpretation to explain why it was denied. It doesn't state why he wanted one in the first place.

Thanks Mark - my bad. I would still be curious as to why he wanted the TO.

5.12.4 A time-out shall not be granted until after the ball has become live to start the game.

Just tell him it's in the book, pull it out of your back pocked, toss it to him, and tell him to start reading.

He never said why he wanted it, and I didn't ask. I just told him it wasn't possible, and to give me five players to start game. This was a 7/8th grade boys select tournament. A few kids showed up late. I sure he was trying to buy time to start these kids.

Does the book need to be ready, with starters designated, at least 10 minutes before the start of the game for 7/8 grade boys? Or is this a rec game?

The weather did suck, and the guy running the tournament didn't want to start on a bad note. We were told as long as everyone was in the book before the start, saddle up and play. This was more of an AAU type tournament. Goods teams and high level of play. The owner\operator of the facility wants people to have a good experience and return. Once the game started we conducted ourselves like we would under normal circumstances, and call the game accordingly. Coaches and players weren't given any special treatment because they paid a fee to play, and that's how everyone treated it. Overall I don't think anyone had any complaint you wouldn't normally get.

The book doesn't have to be ready for any NFHS game 10 minutes before the start. The only team requirement, by rule, is to just hand the team roster and starters to the official scorer.

You're 1000% correct. Thanks... I actually knew that and meant that, but forgot I need to type what I meant. Meaning, if the 7/8 game boys game was playing by NFHS, the coach couldn't have replaced his starters with his late comers without penalty. And yes, I am aware there are reasons why the coach can change a starter without penalty, but if you feel the need to respond with those reasons, by all means...
