Unhappy Question about double dribble

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I have a really stupid question.

I started playing basketball a few weeks ago, and I'm not very clear about the double dribble rule. If a person passes the ball to you, and you catch it with both hands and start to dribble, and then use two hands to grab it again, and make a quick turn, then start dribble again. Is that against the rules? Can anyone clearly clearly explain this rule to me please? Thanks

Basically, you can dribble the ball with one hand or the other, or alternate from hand to hand. If the ball comes to rest in your hand, or if you 'carry' the ball by placing the palm of your hand under the ball, or if you touch the ball with both hands simultaneously, your dribble has ended. And additional dribble would result in a 'double dribble.'

If I am visualizing this correctly, your started the dribble shortly after you caught the pass. Then the dribble ended when you grabbed it with two hands. So when you started to dribble again, that was a violation.

Yes. How about this for clear?

"A double dribble is a violation in which a player dribbles (bounces) the ball, clearly holds it with a combination of either one or two hands (while either moving or stationary), and then proceeds to dribble again without first either attempting a field goal or passing off to a teammate."

Grunewar, what's missing from your explanation, IMHO, is the notion that if you push the ball to the floor with both hands simultaneously once your dribble is started, that's a double dribble. The ball doesn't necessarily have to come to a rest or be held in that case.
