Assignor / Referee Ratio

Lot's of talk in our chapter of overworked Assignors.

1) Please take your referee population and the number of assignors and divide them and post the number.

2) Is your chapter automated with assignment software? Y/N.

1) 62.50
2) Association website has a calendar feature that we use to show us open, assigned, or closed. Each assignor uses his own process to assign officials. Most use The Arbiter.

Send a message via AIM to rainmaker
325-350. (1 assignor, 325-350 refs, 115 schools (4-8 teams each), 7000 games). He also makes quite a bit of money at it, but I wouldn't do it for 3 times his pay!

1) Just under 100
2) Yes, Arbiter.

I filled in for our assignor for a couple days while he was out of town earlier this year. I'm with Rainmaker.... you could not pay me enough to do that job for a full season.

There are somewhere around 4000-5000 officials state wide that work basketball (last figure I heard). In most of Northern Illinois to the Chicago land area, there are probably 10-15 assignors. There are almost no associations that have an assignor that works exclusively for them. I know most of the Class AA Schools throughout the state have assignors (Big Schools). Assignors can hire whom ever they want to if they feel they are qualified.

As I stated we do not have associations (we do not call them chapters) that have little or anything to do with assigning. Assignors might belong to an association, but they use whomever they want to. Some assignors use software, others do not. Assigning software is becoming more and more common. I probably have to register for about 4 assigning websites for this reason.

Peace

If I remember the numbers correctly, approximately 250 refs with senior assignor for high school, assistant for middle school games. I think they mentioned more than 4600 games total.

Zebraware is the software used. Assignor makes high teens (jr makes less than half that) for the work and everyone complains, until you ask anyone if they'd like to do it.

Varsity
1) 58/1
2) Arbiter

Under-Varsity
1) ???/1
2) Arbiter

We currently have separate assignors for varsity and under-varsity, although they work closely together. Our under-varsity numbers are less, not all varsity officials work under-varsity and some only work under-varsity.

There is a conference in our area that has their own assignor, one of ADs, does it. They use officials from multiple associations and do not use any scheduling software.

As a previous assignor for our association, it is a lot of work and a thankless job. You're never going to keep everyone (even a majority?) happy.

Thumbs up

I assign our local kids rec league. I have 23 officials (including me). I don't get paid, but I get to select my own games and partners from December through March. That makes it almost worth it.
