Priorities

What is your list of priorities for a game? I guess this is kind of a survey.

Mine are:

1) Player safety
2) Rules administration
3) Game Flow

I tell people - if the players play safely, and within the rules, they get lots of game flow. If they play unsafely, or violate the rules constantly, they get little game flow.

And this is a serious question - "Deciding where to go drinking afterwards" isn't really the kind of priority I'm looking for here

I'm going to go with...

(1) Paycheck
(2) Safety
(3) Rules, especially sportsmanship

I don't know that we can really prioritize these skills (except #1 ). To be a good official, I think you need to do a nice job of blending all of these concepts together.

I've always gone with communication as the #1 priority. If we communicate well as a crew, we'll have a good game. This includes verbal and non-verbal communication between partners, players, coaches, table crew, and administrators. Before, during, and after the game.

1. Administration of the stop sign
2. Yada, Yada
3. Yada, Yada

Basketball is a dynamic game. My priority is doing the best job I can to make calls that are common sense and backed by a rule. I can't do anything about general player safety because injuries are unfortunately a part of the game. If someone does something unnecessary to put another player's safety in jeopardy I can systematically or immediately eliminate that player from the game.

Hey Tom, I'm surprised you left out ball watching and game management in your list.

Had one crew chief this season that made the comment during pre-game to

"See everything that you call, but don't call everything that you see."

Did you see the new episode last night? Tivo/DVR is a must during the season. What did we do without it? Oh yeah, those things called VCR tapes.

Did you know you can log on to their website as Denny Crane and read his email, etc.? It's really funny.

Here's his "Reminder List" from that site:

I only have one priority. Do the best job I can each and every night.

Peace
