Summary of Penalties for all fouls Pg.65

Nope, A is not "penalized". If attempting a "three", Team A gets to take three free throws and the ball for a throw-in. mick |

mick is correct. If A1 is intentionally fouled during a 3 point attempt, A1 gets 3 FTs. BTW, whether the 3 point attempt goes in or not, A1 will get 3 FTs.

My mistake. I answered the post hurriedly this morning without considering what I was saying. If the 3 point attempt is successful, the shooter gets 2 FTs and the ball. If the shot is missed, he gets 3 FTs and the ball. It's explained, though not very well, in the Summary of Penalties for All Fouls. You don't penalize the shooter by only giving him 2 FTs on an unsuccessful 3 attempt.

In the Summary of Penalties for All Fouls (love how the NF decided which words in that title should be caps) - it states that (4) "Two free throws if intentional or flagrant, plus ball for throw-in". This follows the point that states that they get additional free throws if fouled and the basket was successful, then it states (5b) "Three free throws on three-point try or tap" (yeah - a three point tap - that's fairly common). Then it states in the same section, "Plus ball for throw-in if intentional or flagrant." These two points follow the point on what to do if the shot is unsuccessful.
Therefore we surmise: intentional or flagrant on successful three point attempt, count bucket and give shooter two plus the ball / intentional or flagrant on unsuccessful three point attempt, give shooter three plus the ball.

Just one bonus free throw
FIBA rules state that one bonus free throw will be awarded on a succesful field goal attempt (2 or 3) and of course the bucket counts. And 2 or 3 free throws will be awarded when the field goal attempt is unsuccesful.
I'd take it FIBA rules differ on this point from let's say NCAA rules?

Intentional foul
On a different note:
I had quite an experience this weekend, being rushed of to the hospital after being elbowed on the nose at the first jump ball. Thankfully it turned out not to be broken...

As mentioned above, the Summary of Penalties for All Fouls covers this scenario piece by piece. In the 2001-2002 Case Book, look at 4.19.3 Situation A. I think this will cover this play to a tee. (Not a "T").
