JV Girls' game last night.

I worked with a 30-ish, one-year official, and this was the first game of his second year.
He came without a jacket. He told me he had about 15 games last year. He said he has read the offcials manual.
He had never had a captains meeting. We had one.
He was offered, but did not want to toss the ball.

Every dead ball we made eye contact.
I wondered only twice what he had with regard to shooting, or not. I never wondered about the spot.
He bumped-and-ran well.

Working with younger/newer officials that read the book can be rewarding and quite pleasant.

mick, isn't the "run-and-bump" the way the manual says to do it? I don't like it, but for all backcourt throw-ins, we have the new Lead take off toward the endline and the new Trail comes to administer the throw-in.

reverses is the mechanic (what I know as bump-and-run).

I don't like it b/c it often means that both officials (I work 2-man for HS) have to switch sides of the court. So a lot of time, you have two officials trying not to run through players. I just think it's "neater" to have the "off" official hustle down to become the new Lead.

That never happens to me. If the call is on/near the lead's sideline, the lead just steps up and the trail runs on down the court. If the call is on the trail's sideline, the old trail/new lead runs down that sideline and crosses over upon reaching the endline. The old lead/new trail comes across the court and then up the sideline. Neither official will have to go all the way to the corner because the kids will be mostly be down the court from the new trail who will have a clear area to cut the corner to the sideline. The new lead might have some one deep in the corner but not likely.

Bump 'n Run is the only way to go. It's clean and gets the ball back in play more quickly---before something ugly can happen. We can each run half the court much faster than one of us can run the full court.

I agree. Make the call, point down court, point to the
spot & take off. If you hustle down you should be at
the FT line extended, either side, before either team is ready. Looks good, works well.

Seriously, I understand what you're saying, I just think that 2 officials crossing is not as smooth as 1 guy busting his hump for a few seconds.

Isn't contact legal in the 1st five yards of the coaching box though.....

In my games, not even eye contact from a coach is legal.
