I was Lead (two-man) last night.
Ball was at the top of the arc. A quick shot I was looking through the lane and saw the three attempt. The ball went in. I saw partner may have been straight-lined. He glanced at me. I marked the "attempt". He marked the score and nodded. mick |

I forgot to thank you on that last night, Mick. I couldn't see the shooter's left toe. Eye contact enabled me not to guess. (Saw 6 deer,1 skunk, 1 fox, 2 coyotes on the ride home.)

I have had partners who from lthe lead signal for a three point ATTEMPT before me as trail. I dont know if anything makes feel more vulnerable out there than to have my lead not only watching but signaling for three point shot attempts from the top of lthe key!

Blow your whistle and tell the table that it is a three. Our main goal is to get it right, IMHO. |

not in this case.

In this case he was looking, but asked for help with his glance. If he's looking, and doesn't mark, and doesn't look at me, then he saw it better than I. I trust him. If he wasn't looking, then I can let the ref and table know. mick |

Not trying, but maybe succeeding, in being a jerk.
If the lead could see it was a valid 3pt from the baseline to the top of the arc, it would seem to me that the player was plenty clear of the line. But if what your saying is that it came down to the shooter's left toe, I don't see how the lead could or should make that call. I subscribe to the philosophy,"See global, call local". Either you had doubts about it or just plain got suprised by the shot. I have parnters who call the whole floor. Part of my pre-game is the local/global thing. If I'm stinkin that nite then at the first time out or quarter I will tell him/her if it isnt obvious that I'm not with it yet. But on the other hand I will also tell him/her that they might be reachin a little in their calls. Whew. |

Although I agree with Brad we need to get them right, justifying to a coach that you called something from the baseline because you happened to be looking through gets you in more trouble than if you get it right.
I had a partner on the baseline, I was on top near the 28' mark when there was a pass (about 4' from me) and player jumped up with legs out. Due to my angle and closeness to the sideline I did not see a kick, and the ball was not deflected much if there was one. I was also on the side of the court about 4 feet from the coach of the team who had the ball. I passed but my partner made the call in attempt to get it right, and because he saw it looking through... The coach of the defense immediately stood up and yelled If you are watching that play out there then who's watching the paint. My partner tried to explain it but did not work, and on a couple of ensuing plays then that coach was yelling about on/ off ball coverage. At the next time out My partner ended up hitting the coach with one T and I had to get down the floor and break them up just as partner was threatening T#2. Moral of the story sometimes getting it right causes worse problems than turning to a coach and admitting that I missed the call and I'll work to make sure we dont miss many more. |
