Backcourt violation?

Had this play tonight, just checking on the correct ruling. A1 is taking ball out of bounds near half court after a violation by team B. A1 bounce passes ball towards A2 who is breaking towards the midcourt line. As the ball bounces upward it clearly travels across the midcourt plane. A2 retrieves the ball at its apex with his left foot in the backcourt and his right foot in the front court. After posession, he begins to dribble and brings that right foot into the backcourt so now all three (ball, left foot, right foot) are there. Backcourt violation? What if he would have went the other way and brought ball and left foot into frontcourt on the dribble?

No, not a violation. He has BC status when he gains control of the ball. If any part of the player is touching the BC, the player is in the BC.

I feel a quiz coming on.

Yep Tony.. time to break it out!

Well the other way around would depend on the ball since he was dribbling - remember three points while dribbling. If the ball was in the BC, he still has BC status. If the ball was in the frontcourt, then he stepped back over, then you have a violation.

The vertical plane of the division line means nothing. What is important is where the player is contacting the floor. As BBR told you, since the left foot of A2 is touching the backcourt when he receives the ball this is not a violation.
