I know I'll take some heat, but if a horse is an athlete, then so are the bulls in the rodeo and the dogs in the agility contests.

I draw the line at people. Or perhaps we can extend this board to discussing how to officiate donkey basketball, too?

Fire away.

It's strange how word of a racing horse being put down weighs on us. Seems to sadden a lot of people, even those who don't watch horse racing. From the sound of things, I don't think he'll last through the weekend. It'll be front page on every sport section in the country

I think it's because we all felt a closeness to Mr. Ed.

Maybe it's because of how fast the fall from glory is. One minute your winning a huge stakes race and getting covered with flowers and fed all the oats you can eat.

The next minute, you're being made into glue and dog food.

Um, did you forget the 20 years as a stud in between, Z?

I'll take that life.

It is strange. Why are some people affected like this? Personally, it weighs on me a lot more when my stupid dog rolls in something that stinks.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden.
