Talking

Typical basketball tournament factory. You know, courts
side by side, whistles everywhere, balls flying randomly
across the floor. The court I'm on the only place for
fans to sit is on each endline. So first half, the fans
on each side are complaining about the same thing: you
missed a travel, he never touched him, let 'em play,
illegal screen, call the 3 seconds...My self-esteem is
taking a beating, I can't seem to do anything right!
But they must be right 'cause they're all yelling the
same thing. OK, second half starts and the fans are
suddenly off my back! No more cat-calls, nothing!
Play moves to other end & the same thing, they're all
having fun & enjoying the game. And now, my foul calls
are being greeted by loud approval! But just when I thought
I had it figured out, both sides start screaming again!
Except now, they're all yelling about new things. That's a
foul! He mugged him! Hand check! Someone's gonna get hurt
out there! Take control! At one point I called a travel,
something they were screaming for in the first half, and
instead of warm congratulations they seemed very upset!
Jeez, I just can't figure this stuff out, there must be
someway to keep these fans happy!

If you are worried about keeping fans happy you are in the wrong business. Sell concessions! Seriously, fans are idiots
They yell to yell, they yell to get an advantage,
they dont have a clue about 85% of the rule book,
they listen to Al Mcquire or Billy Packer or Bill Walton and think if they say it, it must be so,
Fans only watch the ball, never off ball, They think they paid their money to get in they can yell,
Need I say more. Call the game, Call it fair, Call it by the rules and let the fans go.

Sparky,
You were lucky. The officials on the other courts would have had no idea where they are screwing up.

When you are running down the sideline, accidently step on one of them, then say sorry, I didn't see you...I forgot my glasses

Man you got that right! At 2 bucks a pop for small
Gatorades I would have been a lot better paid and I imagine
I wouldn't have spent that night with ice on my ankles!

Talking holleree

That's funny, I didn't realize that they were hollering at ME all this time. I thought they were cheering for me. They do the same thing to the players except in a slightly more polite tone of voice. What's funny is the fact that they would nver say anything to your face. I worked the Junior Nationals in Las Vegas last week. I was in the auxillary gym most of the time, so the two rows of beachers were 3 feet behind the team benches/scorers table. They do not start the hollering (or cheering as I thought it was) until the game gets heated up a little. Then at half time we would go sit by the scorers table, practically right next to all the fans, and they would not say anything at all. Then the second half would be a couple minutes underway before they start yelling. It actually only takes one fan, usually the really big big type who has a voice that booms over the loudest crowd. We were fortunate to have one of those at a couple of our games (for our chuckling pleasure). To my partners I nicknamed him Tubbo. He was a parent with the California Elite Gold team. I feel sorry for his daughter because she had to have been embarassed by his stupidity. He was trying to intimidate us too--and I was a little worried that he might just lose his temper and come over and sit on both of us.
My partner even made a very loud very obvious offensive foul call in the Elite's favor, and while we took a time out so the injured Elite player could find her tooth after getting three of her braces knocked off, Tubbo sat up there and muttered "you missed the call" I looked up at him and he looked me with an evil tone and slightly pointed his finger at me and repeated "Yes, YOU missed the call." I chuckled and, though I'm not in the habit of amusing fans by replying to them, I told him "Yes, I am not in the habit of calling obvious fouls in my partner's area, but I do agree with him on THE FOUL THAT HE CALLED." Tubbo didn't even know that my partner called the foul. How stupid do they get? After the game he came up and told me that I needed a rule book. Does anyone have an extra?

Let me tell you. I sold concession when I was in college. You can't keep those fans happy either. Call your game.

Would you be happy paying $2 for Gatorade and $1 for a 35 cent candy bar?

When a fan said this to me, I said, "Do I? Do you have one I can borrow?"
