Aw, look at the bright side, Chuck. The BoSox have some great young players. They've got Papelbon and......Papelbon. And I liked that September call-up that made his first start this weekend....#24...not sure of his name but he looked kinda familiar. He looks like he could be a hitter someday if he gets enough playing time in.

Gibbons calls foul after plunking wife with ball
Associated Press <!-- dateline -->Baltimore<!-- /dateline --> — The odds of such an occurrence seem insurmountable, yet Jay Gibbons pulled off the unimaginable feat: He hit a foul ball that injured his wife. The scene occurred in the ninth inning of the Baltimore Orioles' game against Minnesota on Saturday. Gibbons fouled a ball straight back over the screen and into the rib cage of his wife, Laura. "She's just a little bruised up. She's going to be OK," Gibbons said Sunday. Long before the matter became personal, Gibbons had asked team officials to do something about making it safer to sit in the seats behind the plate. He contended that the 20-foot screen just doesn't offer enough protection from hard-hit foul balls. "It's something you think about every day here. Obviously, it's something I've talked about (to) deaf ears," said Gibbons, Baltimore's designated hitter and player representative. "I've got players coming to me every day saying that one of their family members got hit or almost got hit. I had an usher take one for my wife the other day." Gibbons has suggested that the screen be raised or that the team insert an overhead screen that would extend to the back of the lower deck. "If they're worried about the sight line, which I've heard, all they have to do is throw a net straight back. One of these days, somebody's going to get hurt really bad. That's all I've got to say," Gibbons said. "I'm confused on what's going on (and) why it's so hard just to make an adjustment. It's just a matter of time where a kid's going to get hit." Gibbons has also inquired about the possibility of a day care center, so the players' wives don't have to put their kids at risk. "It's either come to the game and play Russian Roulette with your 3-year-old or stay home," Gibbons said. "That's what we're dealing with. Or move the family section, but then you've got other fans that are endangered." |
That's a little scary. My wife and I attended a game at Fenway several years ago. We were seated about 8 rows behind the Red Sox dugout, at the end nearer to home plate. A line drive foul ball struck a woman in the shoulder one row in front of us; it bounced off her, missed my wife's nose by 2 inches and struck the man seated next to her in the head, breaking his glasses. That was a shaky moment.
I think it's only going to take one lawsuit before all the MLB teams extend the netting all the way down the right and left field lines, as (I think) is done in Japan. |

A pretty good baseball season is winding down.
1. It seems that no one will win 100 games. 2. The Atlanta Braves will not be in the postseason for the first time since 1991. 3. The NL wildcard is truly wild. A three team tie between SD, LA, and Phi is possible. Would they then have two single-elimination playoff games? Chuck, help! 4. Ryan Howard still might hit 61 HRs. 5. I hope that Clemens isn't finished. He sure is fun to watch. He pitched the first MLB game that I ever attended! 6. I hope that Liriano isn't finished. He has barely begun. 7. Mets, Tigers, and Twins ... oh, my! :) Pleasant suprises and overachievers. 8. Red Sox, Braves, and Cubs ... oh, my! :( Major disappointments. 9. My Cy Young picks: Santana and Zambrano 10. My MVP picks: Santana and Ryan Howard (That's right, I chose a pitcher! He was that good and if he wins tomorrow and pitches again on Saturday or Sunday, he could still win 20. They may hold him back to set the rotation for the postseason though.) |
Yo, M&M...
Great show on HBO tonight at 9:00pm, your time. Must-see television!!
It's called <i>"Wait 'Til Next Year"</i>. It's about this MLB team that hasn't won a World Series in 98 years. Guess what team that would be?:D http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/26/ar...tml?ref=sports The quote that I kinda liked was <i>"The Chicago Cubs are <b>definitive</b> losers!"</i> If it's in the NY Times, it's true, it's true...... |

I expected gravestones with two colors of sox on them this morning. You could at least congratulate DJ (TJ?) on a nifty Seattle win in extra innings last night. They score 3 in the ninth to tie it and then win it in the 10th. Ichiro got 5 hits and scored the winning run, Ibanez and Sexson each had 4 hits, and some Putz got the win. Pretty fun game! |
And just to feed JR a slice of humble pie, here's one of his contributions from last year's baseball thread. At the end of the season, Mick commented that the Tigers had a decent farm system and that '06 might be interesting for Detroit fans. JR's take?

What's the *TC* patch on the Blue Jays' left sleeves?
|
Quote:
TC stands for Tom Cheek, who was a broadcaster for Blue Jays games since the inception of the club back in '77. He broadcast 4,306 games for the club until he needed surgery for a brain tumor in 2004. He died last year. His name (along with the number 4306) is in the "ring of honor" with other Blue Jay greats in the outfield of Toronto's SkyDome. A better tribute can be found here: http://www.americansportscastersonli...kmemoriam.html |
Tom was well regarded here in Vermont on WDEV before he went to do the Blue Jays games.

Just some interesting tidbits:
Last night, as I was watching the Cubs game (yes, I'm still watching...sigh...), they mentioned that according to Chuck's Sports Bureau, the Cubs have now set the major league record for the most number of pitching changes in a season. (I was thinking it was 422, but I was too numb to be listening closely.) So I guess we can't complain that Dusty's doing nothing? The next has to do with the Cardinals and their (maybe historic) collapse. If they finish out the season Sunday night within a half game of Houston, they would have to play a rainout makeup game with the Giants on Monday night. The Giants, meanwhile, plan on finishing their season on Sunday night, and I'm sure most of them have their flights booked for the Bahamas, Florida, Bakersfield, or wherever they go in the off-season. Now they might instead have to fly to St. Louis for the makeup game. Wonder how many of the starters will go? Then, from the Cardinals' perspective, if they end up after that game tied with Houston, they would have to fly to Houston for the play-in game, and, if they won that, then fly to either N.Y. or San Diego to start the playoffs on Wed. night. So they have the possiblility of playing 3 games in 3 cities in 3 days. What's football got to compare to that? |

Actually, I've actually had a slightly perverse thrill in watching the Cardinals implode. Where I live it is evenly split between Cardinal fans and Cub fans, and I've gotten a little tired of their chatter over the years. I even saw t-shirts down at Busch this year that touted the Cardinal "dynasty". Huh? It was fun watching the Sox sweep them in the World Series two years ago, and it would be delicious to see them not make the playoffs, after having an 8 1/2 game lead with two weeks to go in the season. Yep, I'm bitter and grumpy. |

Considering where the Twins were at mid-season, it's just amazing that they're in the playoffs, let alone atop the division. I think I heard that they're the first team ever to reach first place for the first time on the last day of the season. The catcher, Mauer, is the first catcher to win the AL batting title and the first catcher ever to lead the whole Major Leagues in batting. Just a remarkable story.
Has anyone seen the ESPN promo for their playoff coverage? It features Tommy Lasorda in a tux trying to comfort a disconsolate Red Sox fan. He says, "It's time to cheer on those teams that HAVE made the playoffs." He turns to the women behind him and says, "Right?" One of them shrugs and says, "I'm from NY," with a typical smug NY look on her face. So Tommy turns back to the Sox fan and says, "Come on, it's time to root against the Yankees". I thought it was done pretty well. |

1) Last year, this team that this pitcher played for couldn't decide whether he should be in the bullpen or be their fifth starter. This year, strictly as a starter, he went 14-11 with a 3.29 ERA playing for a poor team. He also turned into a horse, leading his team in innings pitched with 240. He's still young and it looks like he's got a great career in front of him. Hello, Branson Arroyo. 2) Last year, this 22-year old shortstop wasn't good enough to play for his team as a back-up. His contribution all year was 2 games played and 2 at bats. This year, he played in 154 games, hit .292, scored 119 runs, stole 51 bases and played good defense. And he can only get better. C'mon down, Hanley Ramirez. Btw, it's too bad that Manny took September off. If he hadda played, the BoSox mighta ended up in second place in their division. |
Well, it's now official.
The Rev. Johnny B. is now history with the Cubbies. Gee, what a surprise. He shouldn't be out of work long though. He's a pretty good manager when he's got a team. And now comes the guessing.... - Joe Girardi? - Lou Piniella? - Dilbert? - Billy Martin(I know, I know..but he's still livelier than some of the guys the Cubs have had lately) - ex-Cubbie Orval Overall(look it up) |

I've never been into the Cub/Sox rivalry as much as some people, because my best friend growing up was a Sox fan, and the first game I ever went to was a Sox game. So I was kinda happy they won it last year. I've just learned to dislike loud-mouth Cardinal fans after moving halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, where it's about a 50-50 split between fans. Sox fans started coming out of the woodwork last year, but they're still few and far between. As far as the "next year" comment: Shut up. :D |

I think it's pretty amazing that the Yankees ended up with the best record in the AL. After the injuries they went through, being down in the division until early September. Then they just turned it on, Tigers cooled down a little, and Torre's gang has home field advantage through the playoffs. Love 'em or hate 'em, I gotta tip my hat to 'em.
I can be charitable b/c the Pats looked awesome Sunday :) |
Yanks Should Win
Not too impressed with the job the Yanks have done. With their $198 Million dollar payroll they should be able to overcome some injuries. The A's have a little less than 1/3 that and also had to deal with injuries. Heck the A's could have put out 3 competive teams for that kinda money.
