That was fun. I was glad that Johnny got mostly applause (at least, after he tipped his helmet). Can't believe Ortiz's shot made it out. The wind just killed everything else to the outfield. Can't celebrate too much, tho. Still got 25 more of these to go! :)
Sorry about the Wings, tho, mick. |
You also don't have to worry about those percentage points today either Chuck. Unless of course they give the game back right away.

I thought the funniest comments came from Doug Mirabelli after the game. He was describing his experiences getting to the ballpark - as of yesterday morning he was in San Diego, a member of the Padres. When he got word of the trade, he hopped in a jet hired by the Red Sox, (approximating here) "and the pilot flew about 1,000 miles an hour...I felt like I was in a New York cab. When we landed, the pilot slammed on the brakes, and we skidded sideways to a stop. I had, like, 6 seatbelts on." He then mentioned he changed into his uniform in the back of the police car on the way from the airport to the ballpark. There must be something about being naked in the back of a police car going 100 miles an hour...

Jeez, Sox and Yankees are back to this "percentage points" thing.
But to get very far off-topic, even in this very far off-topic thread, did any of our hockey-loving brethren notice that after the first round of the NHL playoffs, the 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4- seeds advanced in the East; and the 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-seeds advanced in the West? That's bizarre. No upsets in the East, all upsets in the West. That's gotta be a first. |

1) Another good one tonight. Sox leave about 74 men on base. Jeter gives the Sox 2 runs for the lead. Timlin strikes out Giambi and A-Rod back-to-back to end the 7th. Still a ways to go, tho, so I'm not celebrating yet. I feel bad for Matsui. That was ugly.
2) Where did Greg Maddux buy his magic rejuvenation machine? His best start in like 30 years. 3) Anybody see the article in Sports Illustrated a couple weeks ago about the girl who pitched a no-hitter for her HS boys varsity baseball team? Pretty amazing. I can't remember where she was from. Somewhere in the southeast, I think. |
Looks like 3 months for Matsui and maybe the year. As soon as I saw the replay, I knew it was broken. Wrists don't bend like that. Yucchh.....
Some great catches by Damon and Crosby, followed by Bernie performing the Waltz of the Toreadors on a l'il fairly routine fly ball. Double yucchh.... Maybe they'll give Melky Cabrera a real shot this time, instead of running him outa town on his first error. Hope so. The rumor mill in NY already has Soriano being parachuted in from Washington. We don't need another head case; we already got one in right field- even though he's on a sit down strike right now trying to get his contract extended. |

This is one of the things that I love about baseball. Every once in a while stuff happens that is literally once-in-a-lifetime.
You look at the final score, White Sox beat the Twins 9-7, and you say "So what?" Then you realize that Mark Buehrle gave up all 7 of those runs to the Twins in the first inning. And the manager left him in. And on top of that, Buehrle ends up going 6 innings total, with a little help from a triple play in that sixth inning, and gets credited with the win. And then you find out that the last time somebody gave up 7 runs in the first inning and got the win in the same game was back in 1900!!! (Jack Powell of the Cardinals; Sept. 29, 1900; maybe it was the last game of the season.) I know you all already think I'm a strange person, but I just love stuff like that. I think it's pretty cool. |
Don't worry, Chuck - I know you're not strange.
The Easter Bunny told me so. ;) I'll tell you what facinates me - how the heck do they find those types of statistics? And, who sits around and looks through all those box scores to find such a thing? But, that is one of the things that makes baseball pretty cool. I'll guarantee you though, that this probably would never happen in a National League game, because they would've pinch-hit for Buehrle to get some more offense in early. |

Hip hip -- Jorge!!
So for the second time in three days, we get one of those "once in a lifetime" things. Yankees make a HUGE comeback (tied for their biggest comeback ever) to win last night. Apparently, they scored a touchdown as time expired and kicked the extra point with no time on the clock to win 14-13. But the really amazing thing is that no team ever has come back from a deficit of 9 or more runs and won the game with a "walk-off" home run. Until Jorge Posada did it last night. I love stuff like that. Even when the Yankees do it.
By the way, what do the Chicago teams spike their beer with? Some drunk chick almost plunked Jacque Jones from the stands at Wrigley! At least she didn't pick on some elderly first base coach. Who's got the best record in baseball?? Mick's Tigers!!! Who'da thunk it? 'Course they're really only tied for the best record, b/c they've got the World Series Champs in their division, but still pretty amazing. |

So, Bernie Williams has both the longest and shortest doubles of the night in consecutive at-bats? He bangs one high off the right field fence his first time up, then pops one up in the infield that lands between home and first that no one catches, and he ends up on second. I haven't seen that since Little League...

That same charge was leveled against a couple of the Cubs on Sat.'s game against the White Sox (post-brawl). Runner on first, base hit into left, and both runners barely jog to their bases. No running hard, making the fielder think about having to make a play, perhaps forcing the fielder to make a mistake. I guess high salaries don't necessarily equate to high knowledge of the game. I'm turning into a grumpy old man! |
Jeez, I just saw the NY sports headlines on PTI tonight. They're killing ARod for hitting a home run late in the Sox game when the Yankees were already down 6 or 7 or whatever it was. "Thanks for Nuthin' " and "If it doesn't count for anything, you can count on ARod", or something close to that.
I realize that he's hitting .350 or something like that with nobody on base and only .160 or so with runners in scoring position, but we're not even a third of the way into the season, and the Yankees are right near the top of the division. I'm guessing that he's going to turn it around. I guess being the reigning MVP doesn't carry the cache it used to. |

First it was Matsui's gruesome writst injury, then Mariano injures his back while putting on his shoes, then Sheffield goes on the DL with a muscle strain, and now Jeter gets plunked on the hand (although I heard the x-rays were negative). I'm not sure I've ever seen a stretch where 4 of a team's 5 or 6 most important players get injured in such close succession. Very tough stretch.
On the upside, Moyer pitched a 2-hit gem for Seattle the other night. I heard he's the oldest guy to throw a complete game shutout since Charlie Hough in '90 or something like that. On the downside, Atlanta gets swept by Arizona in a 4-game series (in Atlanta) for the first time ever. The party may be over for the Braves, I think. |

What I heard, after the inning was over, he high-fived some fans on his way out to the field. He didn't hold up the game, he didn't do it on camera, and he didn't make it all that obvious. But yet there's talk about him getting thrown at if he would continue to do it. Geeze, how is that worse than the players who stand at the plate and watch it go, or take 5 minutes to walk around the bases. That isn't showing up anyone? (grumpy old guy = off) |

I will say one thing - Jacobs Field is one nice place to watch a game. We sat in the left field bleachers, but we were able to get around to the rest of the areas pretty easily.
