Question No Welmer?

I haven't seen Steve Welmer once in the NCAA tournament this year. Did he have an injury or something that prevented him from working? I know he worked the Big XII championship game, and I don't remember him injuring himself during the game...

That is correct...Steve Wellmer worked the first round at San Diego and was not selected as one of the 36 who moved on from the first and second rounds.

Welmer had the Washington v Utah St 1st round game. Was an alternate on a 2nd round game.

I remember someone wondering last year or maybe two years ago why they see Welmer doing a game every night on TV but yet when it comes tourney time he doesn't move on. If my memory serves me right, someone said he works in too many conferences to move on.

Can anyone remember or know why?

Uh, is this thread serious?

MJ, I think you forgot to put the smiley face indicating you are joking.

I don't get it. Welmer is one of my favorite officials. What's the rub?

I don't know who was in the gym that day to see it, but Welmer had a rough start to the day. Not with calling the game -- it was a well called game -- but with equipment malfunctions. His whistle became dislodged from the lanyard and he lost it during the action, and then couldn't get it reattached for a while in the first half. Pretty interesting to watch how the big-time guys carry on with equipment malfunctions -- you could tell it threw him, and everything was a little off, but he carried on without a blip. Whistle-pants-whistle-pants. :0)

I'm a Welmer fan, but I guess he just doesn't fit the mold of the proto-typical big game guy.

I am not joking. I know he drives people nuts with his tugging on his pants and some of his mechanics aren't by the book (but whose in D1 is?). I think his game management is spectacular.

He must be doing something right...at least in the regular season.

I asked the question to a couple of D-I guys (who I won't name here) a couple of years ago, and they said they had heard through the grapevine that the NCAA selection committee sees Welmer do ALL the big games ALL year long, so they essentially don't put him in the Final Four to give other officials shots at those big games.

Whether that's right or wrong, truth or not, I don't know with certainty. This principle doesn't seem to have hurt guys like Jim Burr, Tim Higgins, Ed Hightower, etc.

Are you kidding (about people being annoyed with the pant tug)?

The pant tug is an integral part of the Steve Welmer drinking game.
