The local high school refs are concerned about how our pay per game compares to the rest of the country. As you all know the price of gas has gone up greatly the past 2 years, but our game fees have not. Locally we call 2 varsity HS games (1 girls and 1 boys) in a 3 man crew and each get paid $65 for about 5 hours of travel and game time. I think this is way too low for what we do for State High school Asociation. What is everyone else making a night or per game?

$65 for two varsity games? Wow. But then, you're not really doing it for the money anyway, right? :)

We've had this discussion before and the fees run anywhere from about $40 for a varsity game to $95, depending on the area of the country. Those are 2-whistle fees.

Chuck, if the known fees range from $40 on up per game & he gets $32.50 per game he's worse than everyone.

But the $40 is for 2-whistle and he works 3-whistle.

...and....? Does that make his $32.50 somehow worth more than $40?

Maybe it's those low fees that is leading to all that discord among officials in Kentucky. After only getting $65 for working a Varsity double-header, I can see why it's a big deal to work one of those $55 State games.

In Central Jersey - $52.50 for Freshman; $52.50 for JV (boys or girs). I walk out with a $105 check everyday. And, I've heard complaints about that. The Varsity guys get $67.50 for two man crew.

$75.00 per official for two V games (3-man crew)

Western NY

$53 for one JV contest

$75 for one Varsity contest

Rarely, if ever, do you do a doubleheader.

2 man crews

Western Wisconsin the pay is:

Varsity Reserve $35.00 (2-whistle)

Varsity $50-55.00 (2-Whistle and depending on the conference).

We normally will not do doubleheaders unless there is an unusual circumstance (official gets hurt, not show for whatever reason). We are toying with the 3-whistle. Our state association implemented 3-whistle for our state tournament. It is not the norm for the regular season and to be honest with you some of the administartors, coaches, athletic directors are against it and my guess is that it has to do with the budget.

X-mas tourney (Varsity only): 2-man $60 (plus $15 travel split between 2 officials)
Post-season (Varsity only): 3-man $60 (plus $15 travel split between 3 officials)

Independent Schools
2-man $35-$60

Around the southern part of IL, JV is about $40 (two man), and $50 for varsity boys (usually three man).

For girls, you usually work both games, three man for $60.

7/8th, both games is 40 and well as Fresh/Soph.

I have a feeling that California is near the bottom, can anyone confirm? I think the median home price in our area is now about $600,000 which makes it a travesty for all who work with kids. School funding made a beeline for the low 40's of 50 states in 1977 and hasn't moved back up - which brings me to my question:

Does officials' pay coincide more with funding for schools, popularity of sports or density of population?
