A1 in frontcourt stops dribble and holds the ball. While making a pass to a teammate, A1 holds back and the ball is fumbled toward his teammate. Can A1 be the first to grab the ball? If so, does A1 have the option of dribbling, pivoting, or must A1 stay set with no pivot?

You have to decide. If it is a fumble, A1 may recover the ball and pass or shoot (and pivot)unless another player touched the ball. If another player touched the ball, A1 can shoot, pass, or dribble (and pivot). If it was a pass, A1 cannot touch the ball without committing an illegal dribble violation, unless another player touches the ball first.

A player can ALWAYS recover a fumble. However, if that player had already dribbled, then he may not dribble again. This player may pivot. The only time a player with the ball may not pivot is after a specific type of jump stop.
If the player throws what was intended to be a pass, but the teammate vacates before receiving it, that player may legally go get the ball if it bounces on the floor first because it meets the definition of a dribble. (There was an NFHS interp on this last year.) Of course, in this case, if the player had already dribbled, then a double dribble violation has occurred. If the pass doesn't bounce, then this is an illegal dribble violation. |
