I haven't had to worry too much about Goaltending or Basket Interference (why am I capitalizing them!?) because, hey, let's face it, 6th grade girls don't get a lot of play above the rim! But I'll be doing some JV and Varsity boys this month in various circumstances and I suspect I'll need to know it at least once or twice. I don't need to feel 100% about every call, but I'd like to get the mechanics correct. Why is there no signal? How do I let everyone know what just happened, what the penalty is, and what happens next? What does happen next? Any help would be much appreciated...

While there is no mechanic for GT or BI, you can probably use other mechanics to say what you need to say.

The most obvious are the count-the-basket (or 3-pt), and the don't-count-the-basket signals. If it's a situation where no points are awarded or cancelled, and people seem confused, it is probably best to say what the call is - BI or GT.

Best advice I received about goaltending is.... Look at the shooter....look at the basket...... if the defensive player is more than half way (closer) to the shooter than the basket it is NOT goaltending. I know this may be hard to judge at times, but at least its a start.

Actually, I do finally. I bought one a few weeks ago to have it ready for when I help officiate at my school's field day this week. (No way was I going to use a flimsy plastic-pea whistle!)

BTW, what should a Fox-40 sound like to the user? Whenever I try to blow the whistle, it sounds very squeaky and weak. Is this right, or am I doing something wrong?

If the shooter is taller than the rim, this won't work. :)

BTW, the corollary is not necessarily true - the defender can be closer than halfway and still not have goaltending.

Okay, then pick your "favorite" Schoolmate to go to the other end of the gym with your whistle. Sounds good, yo?

If you're counting it (defensive) then give a strong
basket counts signal, followed by the 3 point signal
if needed. If you're not counting it (offensive) then give
a strong no basket signal. If there's a shot clock give
the shot clock reset signal. Finally, and this is important, know the difference between BI & GT. If you get
into a discussion with the coach you certainly don't want to
tell him BI when you actually have GT. That's about it.

Other advice: watch the pregame
warmups, you'll quickly see who's going above the rim & who
ain't. Also at the JV level many dunks are blown. Be
patient, it may look ugly but the kid can blow a dunk
without BI. If you see an alley-oop coming, make sure
the ball is not caught above the cylinder (BI). And
finally (this time I mean it), don't forget GT needs to
be a on a tap or try, BI does not, which means (among other
things) that you can have BI on a throw-in but *not* GT.

While I'm looking at the table telling them to count it I'll
remind them to reset the shot clock. It's just what I like
to do, it prevents confusion. And no, it's *not* the "flush
the toilet" motion :).

BTW, Juulie, I just thought of something else to keep in
mind. 99% of these calls are made by the T (or C in 3
person). You shouldn't see it as lead, but if you do give
your partner a chance. Although in last night's 76'ers game
the lead did call a GT late in the game, so what do I know!

It has become acceptable in college and the pros for the lead to call GT. But it's still the T or C's call in high school.

BTW, good call by Bennett Slavatore. He had the perfect angle to make the call.

BTW, can you believe the way the Bucks gave that game to
Philly? That dope Cassell fouls an ice cold Iverson on a
3 pointer and then talks his way into a T? Two flagrants
in the 4th qtr? These guys are having a really tough time
handling the pressure. But it's all good, I'm looking
forward to an LA-Philly finals.

I wouldn't hold my breath.

I thought the best thing about that GT call by Salvatore was the communication between himself and the C at the time (I think it was Ronnie Nunn)...Salvatore and Nunn had double whistles and Salvatore came off the baseline pointing at Nunn - they both called out to each other and then Salvatore gave the GT/count the basket signal...it was a great example of communication w/partner...and as far as the Finals goes, does it really matter whether Philly or Mil. wins the East - neith one of them has a chance with the way the Lakers are playing...
