the following form letter can be used at your discretion

Dear Coach__________

I am writing to apologize for not calling a kick when the ball hit the player from _____________ in the foot. Despite the fact that her foot was flat on the ground and that she was just standing there, this no-call on my part came at a critical juncture right when your team was about to make their run to recover from the 41 point deficit they were facing late in the first half. While I thought I knew the rule, one of your player's mother alerted me to the possibility that any time the ball hits a defenders foot it is always a kick and as she put it, I should have known this.

Also, she suggested that your team was playing this game 8 on 5 so in the future, we will phone ahead and arrange extra opponent jerseys for our crew to wear so there will be no confusion for you fans. Also when calling out of bounds, we will use the terms "their ball" and "our ball" to further avert any confusion.

One final rules adjustment we will make on your behalf is that we will add a special extra coach's box located on the opposit side of the floor for your helping parent standing in the corner. Since he provides such valuable coaching assistance for your team and rules insight for our crew, we feel he sould be included as we barely got through your unfortunate 79-26 loss and were appreciative of his help.

We feel that these accomodations and their advance notice should hopefully allow you to properly game plan for the re-match.

In closing, it is our hope that our lack of rules knowledge on the kick rule will not contribute to a "below average" game rating but rather our open mind and advance game adjustments for next time will garner us an "average". We would also like to thank Ashley's mom for helping us with that rule interpretation! We'll never forget thanks to her!

Sincerely,

___________ - Referee and Player A6 for ______________

Good point.

I suggest the following be added to the last paragraph of the form letter:

Regarding your promise to release me from existing and future assignments for you: can we get that in writing?

Just ask the player's mother that was yapping- "Which player is your grand-daughter, Ma'am?". Smile while you're asking her too.

Don't get mad. Get even.

Recently had a BV coach try to explain the kick ball rule to me. Of course he "kicked" it. He then asked me "so you're saying we can throw the ball off their leg and it's not a violation"? I told him that's an interesting strategy and why would you want to do that? Now it's halftime and he walks towards his locker room shaking his head at me. After the half, he brings his team back out on the floor so they can finish getting beat by 30. Sigh!!

Great stuff! Ahh, the crowd! That bastion of high rules knowledge.

$ 3.00 adult admission makes you a rules expert. I guess its not too unlike me being ann expert movie critic after paying to see a show.

Do you usually yell your opinions at the screen or do you wait til you get back out to the consession workers or ticket takers?

One thing is for sure, fans and coaches are pretty much the same everywhere. Had a girls jv/varsity double Friday. Actually, the coaches were great but the crowd was nasty, which is usually the case at any of the small town schools around here. They always feel compelled to offer you advice and let you know about the 100 or so fouls you have missed over the course of the game. Anyway, I heard a great one during the Varsity contest. My partner had a 10 count in the backcourt on the home team. Did a bump and run so I was inbounding right in front of the home fans. Some guy in the stands was screaming at us that "if the defender knocks it away from her the count starts over." Classic. Probably went home that night and told everyone he knew what a couple of idiots the officials were, they didn't even know the rules for a 10 second count, and that the poor officiating was the cause for the home teams 28 point loss.

Great letter, Larks! I've made copies to keep in my bag. That way, I can leave one with the coach before we leave the building
