Senior told me the last night his best tip to quality officiating.

He said: "Knowing rules violations by observation is a skill of any successful referee. He went on to add these improvements - "make sure you have a well rehearsed set of "rule book quotes" that help address any player, coach, partner or assigner questions in reviewing your calls." "Quote the rule book in any discussion"

His favorites are:
"Legal/Illegal guarding Position"
"Verticality"
"Displacement"
"Unsportsman- Like"
"Team Control"
"Judgement Call"

Interesting message. Emphasis was not only on calling and managing a quality game but communication the rules by the book

That's interesting, cause I was told that one of the knocks against me by some coaches in my area was I'm too "rule-booky" when I talk to them.

Without looking at the books, is the phrase "judgement call" actually used in the book?

Most coaches I know, even at the varsity level, don't read rule books. I don't think it works well in any profession to use "the language of the trade" when conversing with a non-expert.

Without knowing specifically what you say, etc., let me point out that there's a difference between "He had legal guarding position, coach an "He initially stood with two feet on the floor facing the opponent, provided the necessary time and distance, and moved to obliquely to maintian that position and it was not toward the player when the contact occurred and turned to absorb contact ..."

The former tells the coach you know what you're talking about; the latter is too "rule-booky."
