Well I had my first T of the season. It was a slow day for basketball as there was only 1 varsity game in the area so I took a 9th grade boys game. The kid from the home team mande a nice block on a shot. Then he proceeded to say get that sh!t out of here. Well I whacked him. Anyway I went and reported it and the coach asked me what happened. I told him what the kid said and then said and I don't think he was talking about a constipation problem!
Have a good one |

My goal is Zero for the year..... Never going to happen, but maybe I can do it one step at a time...I mean one game at a time....This is year number 6 for me. Year 1 I gave away 4 "T's" same for years 2, 3 & 4. But something terrible happened in year 5. I gave away 7 "T's". Some of you know I coached for 11 years before I became a ref. I love refereeing. When I coached, I hated referees, but I always treated them with respect. Not the case now-a-days...No respect for anyone. I also most gave away a "T" last night and tonight, but it's too early in the season... for me.... Maybe after Christmas....Zero....never going to happen......

I had to issue one in game #3 already. It was clear and everyone in the gym knew the kid earned it. Not a peep from his coach who saw it coming and already had a sub at the table. Now I'm thru game #8 and still holding.

Now, if you're throwing 40 T's a season, that's another story. Maybe you have some game management issues. ![]()

I don't set out with a goal of no T's, nor do I shy away from them. Just part of the game to me. It's nice not to have to use them, however.
It could be dumb luck, good game management, or a thick skin, but I've worked two full seasons, beginning a third, and my only T's were last summer in "scrimmages". |

Good advice Chuck. The goal should be to handle every situation appropriately.

I agree Chuck, that's the way to look at it. I always say that I don't give T's, I assess them when they are asked for. So far this year, I have not had tho call any. Also, I'm working a better (all varsity on varsity nights) schedule. I'm not sure if my mangagement is better or if I'm getting smarter players and coaches.

I moved during the off-season, and my new association requires me to report every T I give, and I hate writing reports, so I guess I won't be calling any T's. ![]()

I've got a funny story about a T to a player as well.
13-yr old kid under the basket shoots, and then yells at me "that was a f* foul". So I T him up. Coaches asked me, what did he say. So, I tell him. Few minutes later, coaches comes to me and says "the kid told me that he never said anything". I reply "I guess it's my word against his then". Jean |

Give Aways....
I think of the "T's" as my children. I like to keep them to myself, but sometimes, I have to "give" them away. I don't have a lot of children and you have to earn them, but if you earn one, I will give it to you.
Here's my thoughts on giving coaches "T's"- If you are losing and I give you a "T", sit down, shut up becaus eyou aren't getting a second one. If you are winning, and I give you a "T" sit down, shut up or you will get a 2nd one.... |

![]() Are you telling me that you won't give a losing coach a second T no matter how bad their behavior is? Are you also telling me that you're gonna treat the winning and losing coaches differently? That's just wrong. Completely wrong. |

Longtime reader, first time poster here.
You have to remember that a Technical Foul is just like any other foul. You call them because somebody broke the rules. Try to not let emotions get in the way of calling these. I know people thing of the T as a big weapon, but it is meant to control the game, the players, and the coaches. So far this season, I have had players use profanity on three ocasions right in front of me. If I can see them use it, they are going to get a T. I had a bench that was heckling the other team that they were beating by 40 points. Coach got a warning, then the bench got a T. Remember, sportsmanship is a POI in the FED rulebook this year. |
