Rule 10.3.5a - Player may not....Place a hand on the backboard or ring to gain an advantage.

03/04 Case Book Comment on 10.3.5 - The purpose of the rule is to penalize intentional contact with the backboard while a try is involved or placing the hand on the backboard to gain an advantage.

If your judgement is his intent was to try to block the shot, you got nothin. If your judgement was he intentionally hit the backboard to cause the ball to fall off the ring or to vent frustration or draw attention to himself, then you have a T.

No - only intentionally slapping the backboard is a technical foul.

what about the net, guys? i don't have my books with me, but if the net is grabbed during a try, is it treated the same way as a backboard slap?

also, what if the backboard is slapped, and the shot goes in? would you count the basket and shoot the t? while a patient whistle would be key, there may be times where this is unavoidable...

thanks...

Hanging on the net would be a technical foul.

As for counting it, no patience needed as the try is in the air. You can blow the whistle rigth away and still count it.

Close but no cockroach.....

It's rule 10.3.5b- Player may not....While a try or tap is in flight or is touching the backboard or is in the basket or in the cylinder above the basket, intentionally slap or strike the backboard or cause the ring to vibrate.
