See NFHS rule 5-2-3, Daddy. It never gets credited to any player.

Yep.... Thanks JR!

ART. 3 . . . If a player scores a field goal in the opponent's basket, it is not credited to a player, but is indicated in a footnote

My my, I just confuse people :P

In FIBA it's the opponent captain getting credit for the score. Havn't got the rule book here so I can't check the refrence though.

And you may call me V'ger if you'd like :P (anybody seen star trek :D) or CV works too, came thing for me.

Wrong sport. In baseball, the closest player to one runner passing another gets credited with the out and in football, the closest player gets credited when a safetyi scored.

Points obviously go to the team into whose basket the ball went, but after the ball goes in, do you blow the whistle and award the ball to the the team of the confused girl? Or no whistle, let them figure out what happened and play on?

When this happened last weekened, I blew the whistle because after it happened there was a lot of confusion. Told the scorer to count the basket for the correct team and then in-bounded to the confused girl's team while getting everyone re-oriented.

Thinking about it later, I'm not sure I should have blown the whistle since there was no violation or foul. Whistle or no whistle?

You did it exactly right. A whistle needs to be blown on this play.

The definitive ruling for the NFHS is given in the Simplified and Illustrated book on page 21. The official is to stop play, credit two points to the team whose goal the ball went through, and then award the ball for an end line throw-in to the team not credited with the score.
