Last night, we had the annual banquet for our board, IAABO#9 Fairfield County Ct. It was a typical banquet for sports officials, Certificates of service for 10, 15, 20, 25, and 2 for 40 years. More importantly, we, at our monthly meetings, run a raffle, and the proceeds go towards the Donald Lomme Student Scholarship Awards. We have divided our county to 3 areas and the schools nominate a senior player from both the girls and the boys basketball teams, then the awards committee, looks into each candidate. We take into consideration, the student's sportsmanship, grades, outside aactivities and such. Well last nught one of the boys award recipients played on a team that went 0 and 21 for the season. You would think that would be enough to earn the award but, he made 1400 on his SAT's he's 4th in his class of 400, captain of the basketball team as a senoir, captain of baseball team last two seasons, he, as a junior, won an engineering contest at West Point, his has no father figure at home for whatever reason, he's just an all around good kid. Now after going 0-fer the season you would think that there would be some humility but when he excepted his award he thanked us for being on the floor because " while we couldn't play the games without you, you made up 50% of the crowd at most games."
All I can say is, that is why I officiate high school basketball. Any other "good kid" stories out there? |

A few years ago I worked a JV boys game. The home team was thrashed by a good 25 points or so. During the game I remember how the home team's point guard really went all out all the time, which contrasted with many of his teammates.
Sat myself alone in the stands to watch the varsity game which followed, and the home JV players were dressed in civilian clothes seated quietly behind the varsity bench. This point guard looked up and saw me sitting a few rows behind him, and immediately walked up to me and sat down. He spent the next half hour asking about some of BB's rules, such as "exactly when does the five-second throw-in count end?" and "what's your definition of legal vs. illegal handchecking?" Nice kid, well dressed, non-critical of me, tough game on the floor, but still interested in the finer points of the game. I'd be willing to bet he's got a college degree by now and is contributing solidly to society. I'll never forget the kid.

This weekend I was doing a huge 3-on-3 tourney for the city. They had all levels on the court, but I had one kid (probably 10 year old) come up to me and tell me that I was doing a good job. That is what it is all about.
