You Seppos may not be aware, but the greatest Australian basketball player of all time announced his retirement yesterday - Andrew Gaze. His 22 year-long professional career highlights include:
Seven NBL MVP awards, 14 scoring titles, the all-time leader in points, assists and games (612), five Olympic Games including two as captain of the Boomers, four world championships, NCAA Championship runner-up with Seton Hall University, NBA Champion with San Antonio Spurs. As well Gaze was the flag-bearer for Australia at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

(Oh and keep in mind that the NBL season is usually only about 25 games - Gaze averaged 30.9ppg, 5.8apg and 5.1 rpg and shot 52% from the field, 36% for 3 pointers and 86% for free throws)

In addtion, his father (Lindsay) has also announced his retirement as head coach of the Melbourne Tigers (the team that Andrew played for).

Anyway, you may not care, but is a pretty monumental occasion for Australian basketball

As soon as you said greatest Austrialian player I knew immediately to put Andrew in front of the name Gaze. I remember him playing in college, the Olympics, and the NBA.

Hey was Ken Cole any good?
Just wondering about a player from the 60s by the name
of Ken Cole.
It was rumored that he was to be the first non-American to be drafted into the NBA, but his reputation for wildness
kept that from happening.
By the way I've seen him in San Dieo and he's doing fine.

Of course, Luc Longley was the first Australian to play in the NBA.

Great for Australia! They have reason to celebrate - the incredible career of two basketball icons.

My memory may be a little but off, but.....

Didn't Gaze jet into Seton Hall in 1989 and register as a 24 year-old junior who had already played in 2 Olympics? And a coupla days after Seton Hall's last game in the NCAA tournament that year, he was on another plane headed right back home to Australia? He not only didn't stay at Seton Hall for the year, he was barely there for the one semester IIRR. I believe Seton Hall got investigated by the NCAA over this one-- the rumor at that time was that Gaze got paid really well under the table for his one semester.

Iow, his time had Seton Hall shoulda been included in the "professional" part of his career on his resume.

I was living near Vegas and I went to UNLV's first home game after they won the NCAA championship (1990???). They unfurled the banner. The opponent was Princeton. There was an editorial the next day in a NY Metro newspaper that referred to the fact that UNLV managed to stay together, and the reason offered was that they didn't want to take the pay cut, if they went pro.

Jerry Tarkanian didn't have to worry about the salary cap at UNLV. He didn't have one.

The guy was a walking NCAA violation.

Really not sure about this one - at the time there was absolutely ZERO college basketball coverage in Australia (and there was only one 1/2 hour packaged NBA program shown at 3:30 Wednesday mornings).

Just checked the Seton Hall stats for Andrew Gaze - in the 1988-1989 season he played 38 games (started 37 of them), led the team in minutes per game (32.6) and was second in ppg (13.6)
