He arrives dressed 5 minutes before game time, ask where the paychecks are, and is out of the building before the echo of the buzzer is gone. Don't know why the AAU assigner gave him about 10 games this weekend, but it contributes to coaches being upset.

He had to leave because he's defender of the universe.

Why do the coaches care as long as he's there prior to the toss and at the final buzzer?

I've reffed with some officials who are there before the toss and at the final buzzer. But, they're so slow, they're out of position even at those times!

I had 5 in a row last weekend. I tried to not let that be known unless directly asked. And some coaches do ask. I'm not going to lie to them, so my reply was that the first 3 games finished 40 minutes early, so I actually had time for a bite to eat and rest my legs in between.

Red face

I always get a kick out of the whole "How many games has that ref worked?" attitude that the coaches have at some of these tournaments. They act as if there is an infinite stream of officials dying to work these games. I work these games because I want to, I'm working 6 or 10 games because no one else will. If they want to know why, perhaps they should read the wealth of stories we have posted on this board re: AAU, Rec Leagues, CYO, Mens' Leagues, etc.

I should clarify. This is a guy who will lean against the wall with one arm while officiating during live balls, go to the water fountain out of the gym during a TO, ignore varsity officials' advice, not hustle to get in good position, and is more concerned about getting paid and doing lots of games than doing a good job.

Now do you see why coaches get upset?

I understand those comments.
I have observed officials in their 6th to 10th games.
They often walk and are too tired to blow the whistle.

So what you can get are a bunch of tired, sloppy players on the floor with a couple of tired, sloppy refs with tired coaches observing.

Not a pretty picture.

Clearer than your first post.

BTW, I'm guilty of stepping into the lobby for some water during a long stretch of games.

Sue me.

Agreed.

Three weekends ago, I was assigned 13 games! Ridiculous! I gave two up to my regular HS partner. Evenso, 11 was too many. Lask weekend, told the assignor last weekend that I did not want more 10. 7 games worked out quite nicely. 2 on Fri., 3 on Sat., and 2 on Sun. and I still felt good.

This guy does it during JV games. In fact, all of those things and more, he does during JV games.

Which is why he'll always be working JV games.

Some people don't want anymore than that.

Just one less bit of competition for the spots at the top
