Are you sure about this?

I know each automatic bid conference is guaranteed at least one official from their regular staff to work the tourney, but does it extend to conference championships, too? (32 auto-bid conferences x 3 officials = 96 officials. Even with some overlap, that means there would be very few 'at-large' ref bids.)
Conference coordinators nominate officials from their conference. It makes sense that the officials being nominated are also the ones chosen for the conference championship game. I had not heard about "automatic bids".

He always name drops but I've checked with some of those people and they don't know him. I would like to print the list so she can shut him once and for all. This guy is so big he couldn't keep up with 3 on 3 half court.
There is no complete list of D1 officials. Tell me again though, why do you care?

Because this moran runs around the office talking out of both sides of his mouth and she wants to shut him up.

I haven't seen Dick Cartmell's name come up.
He has done the NCAA championship game the last couple of years.

This fool just told her yesterday that he was working the Final Four. I haven't even been able to have dreams of working final four games yet.

He very well may be working the final four. At the sports bar down the street where he moonlights as a dishwasher. :P

There is no truth to the previous statement that officials who work a conference championship game are "automatically" given NCAA tournament assignments. Each conference is allowed to select one official from its' staff; those officials are guaranteed of an assignment. The remaining officials are chosen based on their performance during the season (by Hank Nichols and those that assist him)

Of the 99 officials who work the 1st round (33 games - including the "Opening Round" game in Dayton, OH), 48 are selected to work the 2nd Round (based on their performance in the 1st round at each sub-regional site). On the following Mon/Tue, 36 officials (that worked the 2nd Round)are notified of their assignments for the Regional Semi's and Regional Finals. The Mon/Tue prior to the Final Four -10 officials (qty. 3 3-man crews plus an alternate) that worked the Regional Semi's and Finals are selected. For example, last year J.D. Collins was the Final Four alternate (for all 3 games); he worked the Ok. St vs. Pitt. Regional Semi-Final game. This year he worked the WVU vs Louisville Regional Final game - therefore, he is one of the 36 officials eligible to be selected for the Final Four.

ChrisSportsFan,

Are you by chance from Michigan? The reason I ask is I know an official here in Michigan that works basketball and pulls the same kind of stuff you were referring too with this other guy.

It makes no sense. Who is the guy trying to fool? The guy I know is even worse in baseball because he goes around telling people that he worked in the Majors with Froemming and this list goes on and on.

Kinda like the energizer bunny.
