What are some funny ones you've seen or heard of? I know there are some good ones out there. Like Lewisville Texas, just outside of Dallas, they're the Lewisville Fighting Farmers. Let's stick to HS. I know there some funny names for Minor League ball.

Nevadaref Wed Mar 09, 2005 09:17am

We have a local team out here nicknamed the Muckers.

Of course, that makes the moms of the kids--- mother muckers!

JRutledge Wed Mar 09, 2005 09:21am

Illinois High School names

Freeport and New Berlin Pretzels.

Rochelle Hubs (Hub of the community)

There are some others names. These are what I remember off the top of my head.

Peace

U.P.date

ESPN and the Tonight Show highlighted the Watersmeet Nimrods (U.P. of Michigan) last year.

The Nimrods made it through the districts and are headed here to Houghton this week to play in the Regionals. Regional winners go to the Michigan quarterfinals.

I went to school in Rochelle til my Dad's company transfered us to Houston. I forgot about that. We were "the Hub" of the district. In Jr High we were The Hublets.

My wife's college roommate went to high school in Missouri (I forget the town). The built a new high school and let the students come up with the team name. They came up with the "Kewpies", like in kewpie doll.

Small world. I have officiated this school for the past 4 years. I had them on the road my last regular season game this year. I have even officiated at this school for football for a few years.

That would be Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri.

One of my favorites is from across the river in Illinois...Teutopolis High School, home of the Wooden Shoes.

M&M Guy Wed Mar 09, 2005 10:17am

Of course, here in central IL we are blessed with several towns that have unusual names. Close by, there are the Fisher Bunnies. Yep, even the football team uses that. Then a little further south is the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes (former Dutch community), and don't forget about the Hoopeston Corn Jerkers. In fact, Thad Motta, the current Ohio State coach, is a former Corn Jerker. (Or can you ever be a "former" Corn Jerker?)

Wearin' Stripes Wed Mar 09, 2005 10:21am

Indiana:

Vincennes Lincoln "Alices"
Shoals "Jug Rox"
Rising Sun "Shiners"
Frankfort "Hot Dogs"
Indianapolis Northwest "Space Pioneers"
Delphi "Oracles"
Eminence "Eels"
Garret "Railroaders"
Greenwood "Woodmen"
International "Gryphons" (I have no idea)
Jimtown "Jimmies"
Kokomo "Wildkats"
Logansport "Berries"
Mishawaka "Cavemen"
New Harmony "Rappites"
Northeast Dubois "Jeeps"
Plymouth "Rockies"

rockyroad Wed Mar 09, 2005 10:23am

Here in WA State we have the Davenport "Gorillas", and the Toutle Lake "Fighting Ducks"...never have figured out what a fighting duck is supposed to be...of course we also have an NAIA college called the Evergrees State "Geoducks" - it's pronounced "gooey-ducks" and it's a really big clam...

It's a town of about 8000 people and everyone used to come out and support basketball and football. I moved away 20 years ago and have only been thru Rochelle twice since then.

I had a friend that worked for a newspaper in northern California. One of the teams they covered was the Hollister Haybalers.

I've officiated games for the Fisher Bunnies. By the way, the Jr High mascot is the Scotties (the dog).

Where are you from M&M?

In Yuma AZ, the YUMA High nickname is the Criminals.

drothamel Wed Mar 09, 2005 11:32am

My HS alma mater is located in Fluvanna County, VA. We are the Flying Flucos. "Fluco" is short for Fluvanna County. There have been numerous attempts to create a mascot that would go along with "Fluco"-- all to no avail. Currently, the logo is a flying "F." Although it used to be a flying foot, much like the symbol most of us see track teams use. As a result of the flying foot logo, the gym here is referred to as "The Shoebox."

Waynesboro High School, just over the mountain from me, call themselves, The Little Giants. Harrisonburg High School, home of George Toliver's Daughter, are the Blue Streaks.

One time when I was travelling in West Virginia, I seem to recall a high school there in Polk County who called themselves the Dots.

[Edited by mikesears on Mar 9th, 2005 at 11:14 AM]
I live only 5 miles from the Assembly Hall, home of the #1 basketball team in the country, in Champaign.

I'm familiar with the Scotties as well, because I refereed one of my first games in that gym. There was no room along any of the sidelines. The benches were up on the stage, along with the table; the kids had to jump up and down off the stage to go in and out of the game. The stands were permanent and raised on the other side, complete with railings in front. (If anyone has ever been to the Corn Palace in South Dakota - it's set up the same way except 10 times smaller...) The endlines were only about a foot from the brick walls, so they set up "restraining" lines about a foot in from the actual endlines for the throw-ins. And finally, the floor was so small they had the three lines across the center of the court - one center line, and two other lines on either side of the circle. They would use the center line as the 10-second line, then the furthest of the three lines away from that team's basket as an "over and back" line, because the center line was only about 10 feet from the top of the key. Imagine being a new official trying to learn all the "real" rules, and trying to keep straight all the lines as well. Geesh.

I believe they recently built a new grade school and tore this one down. But the Scotties still remain.

Jerry Blum Wed Mar 09, 2005 11:38am

I thought Effingham HS in Illinois used to be the "Flaming Hearts".

I think Speedway HS in Indiana is nicknamed the "Sparkplugs", I could be wrong about that. Speedway is the part of Indianapolis where the Indianapolis Speedway is located.

That's all I can remember. "Pretzels" was one that I had heard off before but can't remember the school in Illinois.

Speedway Sparkplugs (about a halfmile from the motor speedway)

Go Illini!!!!!

I am in Bloomington. When I still worked basketball games, I worked my first ever game at Fisher Jr High. Are the fans there still as rowdy as they used to be? That court was so small! Glad to hear they built a new school (hopefully with a larger gym).

They missed Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The nickname is “The High School.” EHS, founded in 1839, was the first pure high in the state.

BTW, if you want to send your child to EHS it will cost you just under $32,000 a year.

JRutledge Wed Mar 09, 2005 01:12pm

Mikesears and M&M Guy,

Did you guys not see my Pretzel post at the beginning? :D

BTW, there was a guy trying to write a book about the nicknames of Illinois High Schools. This guy came to a Fox Valley Football Official's meeting a few years back and had information on just about every name and some history. He knew why schools had unusual names and their origin. I do not know what happen with that book idea, but he had a lot of good information.

My High School was named the Bombers (Macomb).

I was told when I was in HS the name was for two reasons. One was the name had a military affiliation to go along with the local university that was named after the U.S Marines (Western Illinois Leathernecks). The other reason was that one of the soldiers that were on the "Enola Gay" Bomber that dropped the first nuclear bomb on Japan was from Macomb. I know that was talked about when there was a made for TV movie called I believe "Enola Gay," which was about the soldiers and events of that bombing.

When I was a kid in Illinois, Kankakee HS was the "Kays". Here in Oregon, we have the Tillamook Cheesemakers.

Although this is college, it's funny. When Darryl "Mouse" Davis coached football at Portland State, the team was called the "Fighting Mice". They're really the Vikings, but Fighting Mice sounded cooler.

A few years ago, I was watching a USC - UCLA basketball game on TV. Some UCLA students had a sign that said "Flush Used Trojans".

I would have been funnier to me except my HS team was the Trojans.

theboys Wed Mar 09, 2005 02:19pm

When I was a kid, our boy scout troop ushered Rice University football games. One evening, Rice played LSU. On the sideline in front of us, the entire game, two fraternity pledges knelt next to each other, and alternately performed the "I am not worthy" motions. Each had a poster in his hands. One poster read LSU, the other read CKS. Occasionally, they would raise up at the same time, drawing big howls from the fans.

M&M & mikesears,

Talking about T-town and Effingham. Wow, didn't expect to see that on the forum today! ;) I'm about an hour from them, I'm in Robinson.

Another one around the T-town/Effingham area would be the Charleston Trojans. Not so much a funny name, but actually I believe they were playing Effingham. Anyways, during lineups everyone in the Effingham student section pulls out a Trojan condom and throws it on the floor. The whole section was cleared. And of course during playoff time or big games the opposing team always as the "Trojans bust under pressure" signs or something along those lines.

Ouch.

The reason that one hurts is because my wife and I were married April 1, 1989. (My wife picked that day, by the way - I'm still not sure which one of us was the fool.) For those that aren't MI or IL fans, that's the evening they met in the Final Four. When we found out that's when they would be playing, we had to make arrangements to bring our TV to the reception, otherwise everyone would be leaving early to go watch the game elsewhere. As it turned out, other people had the same thought, and we ended up with 6 TVs at our reception. Of course, the DJ had to wait until the game was over before he was allowed to make any noise. Once the game was over, the mood was rather subdued. For about ten minutes. Then the DJ started playing tunes, and the party started.

But it's all Michigan's fault our marriage started off badly! :D

There are some others names. These are what I remember off the top of my head.

Peace

I had Freeport this season. In WI we have the Nekoosa Papermakers. I'll think of more.

They are the New Berlin Pretzels. (That's New BER'-lin, not ber-'LIN).

Kind of like Athens, IL (pronounced Ay-thens) and San Jose, IL where the "J" makes the "J" sound and not the Spanish "H" sound. and the "E" is silent.

Thanks for the proper pronuncitions(sp?). I used to live in Athens -- more than a little confusing when you try to explain where you're from.

You Central Illinois guys help me out, my father-in-law has made mentioned two great names from the area.

One is the Bunnies -- I cannot remember what town they're from, but there's a mascot that will strike fear in the hearts of all challengers.

The other is the BlueBoys -- I believe that's Carthage.

Arkansas Tech University is the WonderBoys

Lsams,
You're right. Carthage is the Blueboys. Having formerly lived in Monmouth, though, you gotta like the Zippers! RR

Still, the most politically incorrect team is in the NFL - the Washington Redskins. That's offensive. And don't tell me they're named after a type of nut.

Being a Cowboy fan, we call them the "Deadskins". I wish we played them 16 times a season. Can you say 13 of the last 14?

Being an Eagles fan, we refer to them frequently as the 4-skins.

I play in a rec ball league here in Japan. Alot of teams pick English names for themselves. We get a few funny names that maybe made sense in Japanese but sound strange after they translated them into English:

We've played the:
Penetrators
Hernian
and my personal favorite: Vague.
I am just waiting for someone from team vague to ask me what their team name means. "Oh that's tough to define. Your team name is kind of unclear"

Nimrods were defeated by Posen in the quarterfinal game, by one, in overtime.

That's true - except it's spelled Poca Dots. I actually do basketball and softball games there. ESPN did a special on HS nicknames a few years ago and featured The Dots as #1.

Some other unusual or interesting ones we have are:

The Clay Battelle Cee Bees
Stonewall Jackson Generals
Cammack Blue Streaks
Ceredo Kenova Wonders
Buffalo Bison

We have Papermakers in our part of Wisconsin too, (Kimberly) as well as Polar Bears (Hortonville). In high school, we played the Wabasso Rabbits. They thumped us.

The Vincennes Lincoln High School (Indiana) sports teams are known as the Alices, after a famous song, 'Alice of Old Vincennes.' The funny thing is that the boys teams are the Alices and the girls teams are the Lady Alices.

Also in Illinois we had the Kankakee K's (what else?) and possibly the most offensive name (along with Washington Redskins), the Pekin Chinks (no, I am not kidding).

WA has the Richland Bombers, Hanford Nuclear site is close by, and the hs logo is a mushroom cloud.

Also, Blaine Borderites, on the Canadian border. The logo is a monument on the border in town. But, a few years ago they had somebody in a tiger suit at games as a mascot. I have no idea what a tiger had to do with the town or school.

In Henryetta, Oklahoma they used to be the Hens. Either both teams got tired of the name or maybe just the boys teams but now they've changed it.

Troy Aikman was a Hen growing up.

While many names in and of themselves may not be funny I find many names funny when proceeded by LADY. We have the LADY Rams, (shouldn't they be the Ewes?) We have the LADY Savages (Seems an oxymoron) The LADY Cowboys (Perhaps should be the Cowgirls), The LADY Steers (maybe should be the heifers) Here in Oklahoma we also have the Alva Goldbugs, The Haskell Haymakers, The Berryhill Maidens and best of all the Hooker Horny Toads

The University of Oregon has a fighting duck for a mascot. If their mascot ever had to fight the one from Oregon State, I'm not sure who would win - a duck or a beaver. Neither one really strikes fear into one's heart.

At least Portland State is the Vikings.
