My personal favorite is the Effingham Flaming Hearts-it's my alma mater.
It comes from the fact that at one time way way back in the day the population center of the US was located a few miles West (or maybe East - I don't remember) of town.
I do believe that the nickname has been changed or updated since then. I think that it was changed to Fighting Hearts. Whether that was an official change, I don't remember. Then the word "Fighting" was dropped. Now, I think that it is just the "Hearts". However it's been over 20 years since I was last there. But, there was a great rivalry between the Hearts, the Wooden Shoes, and the St Anthony Bulldogs (also located in Effingham).
Also, I'm not sure that I saw the Centralia Orphans mentioned.
