I was told when I was in HS the name was for two reasons. One was the name had a military affiliation to go along with the local university that was named after the U.S Marines (Western Illinois Leathernecks). The other reason was that one of the soldiers that were on the "Enola Gay" Bomber that dropped the first nuclear bomb on Japan was from Macomb. I know that was talked about when there was a made for TV movie called I believe "Enola Gay," which was about the soldiers and events of that bombing. Peace |

Actually, I was just distracted by looking through the proposed NCAA brackets for that team from Ann Arbor. :p |
When I was a kid in Illinois, Kankakee HS was the "Kays". Here in Oregon, we have the Tillamook Cheesemakers.
Although this is college, it's funny. When Darryl "Mouse" Davis coached football at Portland State, the team was called the "Fighting Mice". They're really the Vikings, but Fighting Mice sounded cooler. A few years ago, I was watching a USC - UCLA basketball game on TV. Some UCLA students had a sign that said "Flush Used Trojans". I would have been funnier to me except my HS team was the Trojans. |
When I was a kid, our boy scout troop ushered Rice University football games. One evening, Rice played LSU. On the sideline in front of us, the entire game, two fraternity pledges knelt next to each other, and alternately performed the "I am not worthy" motions. Each had a poster in his hands. One poster read LSU, the other read CKS. Occasionally, they would raise up at the same time, drawing big howls from the fans.

Talking about T-town and Effingham. Wow, didn't expect to see that on the forum today! ;) I'm about an hour from them, I'm in Robinson. Another one around the T-town/Effingham area would be the Charleston Trojans. Not so much a funny name, but actually I believe they were playing Effingham. Anyways, during lineups everyone in the Effingham student section pulls out a Trojan condom and throws it on the floor. The whole section was cleared. And of course during playoff time or big games the opposing team always as the "Trojans bust under pressure" signs or something along those lines. |

If you're still in town next season, maybe we could hook up then. |
Yes boys is tonight. Well I won't be too far next year, probably an hour away in Charleston. However, we'll connect somewhere. Do you remember who you worked your game with at LTC?

I have confirmation. It is Poca High School in WVA. Their homepage says, "Poca High School. Home of THE DOTS. Where champions are made."
