i know a couple of years ago they made throwing an elbow without any contact just a violation. what are the other options for making contact with the elbow? i did a game tonight where a rebounder threw an elbow and missed the opponent and i called a violation. the coach thought i was crazy, he said there was no contact and i said thats why i called a violation.

Live ball player swinging has the ball:

1. Player control foul.

2. Intentional foul.

3. Flagrant foul.

Live ball player without the ball:

1. Common foul.

2. Intentional foul.

3. Flagrant foul.

Dead ball, with or without the ball:

1. Nothing.

2. Intentional technical foul.

3. Flagrant technical foul.

Excessively swinging the arms/elbows without contact is a violation, NFHS 9-13 - you had it right. If there is resulting contact, BZ's matrix gives you your options - what you call depends on the nature & severity of the contact.

I had a coach not understand that one too.

"She has a right to get her space." Uh, no coach, she doesnt. Not by swinging them like that.

The funny thing was there was a tiny touch with one of the elbows to another player. I could have called the personal, but went with the violation (since the touch was minor and when she brought them back after she was done "swinging").

See the thanks I get.

2002-2003 POE
4.e. Excess Swinging of Arm(s)/Elbow(s)
-When there is no contact with an opponent is now a violation.
-If contact is made, the official must judge the severity of the act and possibly even determine intent.
-A player control foul, an intentional foul or a flagrant foul may be called.
