Question

jr. high ball

after TO

Team A does not come out of huddle. i put ball down on the court and begin my 5 second count. at the end of the count, i whistle the 5 second violation and ready the ball to be put in play by Team B.

should i have gone to the score's table and reported a delay of game violation on Team A?

i didn't and now i think i should have.

thanks, just trying to get it right!!!

JohnBark,
You followed the procedure just fine.
There is no warning necessary.
All that is required is that we let the teams know that the time is about to expire at that warning buzzer.

But don't lose sight of your "game management" skills in order to maintain your game in an enjoyable atmosphere.

In some cases of early-season, lower level ball [with new coaches, young players, subs entering or with general characteristic confusion] an additional notification, reminder and encouragement to the teams may go a long way to get the going to everyone's satisfaction. But if you do that for one team, make sure you are fairly understanding to their opponent if necessary.

Nope. Not one of the three warnings in 4-46. Don't warn for stuff that doesn't fit.

You may have missed one vital step

JohnBark:
In your initial posting, you do not indicate that you gave a blast on your whistle
before putting the ball down on the court and beginning the 5-second count.

As indicated on Page 50 of NFHS rulebook (7-5-1)

ART. 1 Â… After a time-out (as in 7-4-4) or the intermission between
any quarter (as in 6-2-2), the resumption–of-play procedure is used to
prevent delay, The timer will sound the authorized warning signal and final signal.
The administering official will then sound the whistle to indicate play will resume.

I agree with Mick that good game management would involve a little more proactive
(aka preventative) officiating; especially at this level of play.

Willie

yup..

willie,

yup, i do and did give a blast on the whistle. and then i started my 5 second count. i was only concerned with what happens after the 5 second count. in that, do i inform the scorer's table of the delay by Team A, which would then result in future T's if a delay or other violation that would result in a T's after a warning was given.

but, thanks for pointing that out. after all TOs, intermissions and lengthy delays, a blast on the whistle shall be given. that is correct.
