I posted this on our association forum also.

My goals for this year. Nothing new just constant reminders to myself.

What are your goals?

1. Get the shooter on every foul. Don't be surprised when it is the seventh foul and you are supposed to shoot one and one and you have no idea who the shooter is. Be game aware and know when a team has 6 fouls.

2. Check that clock and shot clock constantly. If the table makes a mistake with the shot clock be aware and catch it.

3. Work for the best angles on each play

4. Have no correctable error situations.
(never have had one and want to keep the record clean)

5. No Administrative technicals. Do some preventative work before the game. Have coaches at tournaments with an official scorekeeper double check numbers and names. (sometimes they will take the names and numbers from programs and the programs are wrong and coaches forget to double check)

6. Learn from more experienced officials and help less experienced officials as much as I can.

Don't feel intimidated working wth a veteran and don't feel high and mightly when working with a brand new ref.

7. Be early, not on time to the game site.

8. Give every game, no matter what level or gender, my best effort.

9. Sell those tough calls with a strong whistle and even stronger mechanics.

10. Work well with all my partners.
It's a team effort.

11. Be consitant in my calls from minute 1 until the end of the game.

12. If I blow a call, learn from it.
Don't lose too much sleep over it, but don't forget it either.

13. Don't grant a time out on a free throw situation too quick. Check the shooter and get the number before granting the time out.

14. Don't guess

15. See the whole play

16. Accept criticism and use it to become better.

and finally.......

17. It's a tough game to officiate. Work hard and do the best I can. On that drive home I want to be able to say I did the absolute best I could and then vow to be better the next time.

I am sure there are more but Thanksgiving Dinner is about ready.

Good list, except for that one.

If you do #1, why is #13 necessary?

Curious. Why do you object to this? You must have a reason.

I like the list and will take some items for my pregame tonight...but even more it got me to thinking about the subject line...Goals, I remember writing down some goals as far as what I want to accomplish on and off the court over the past two seasons and I even broke it down into 1 yr, 2 yr, and 5 yr goals. I was able to accomplish those 1 yr goals each time I put them down in writing and had some purpose to my officiating. I think that is something we should all take a few minutes to do...going to do mine right now...Good luck this season all...

One great way to accomplish your goals is to write them down. Many of the things on the list I personally would not consider to be a goal. But each person is different. This is a great way to look back and see how far you have come.

Peace

A goal not written is only a wish

I agree about writing your goals down. I've started carrying a "game journal" in my bag. After each assignment I take a few minutes and think about things and write down what I think I did well and what I did poorly. The final thing is always a list of things to work on for next game. Then before each game I open it up and see what is on my list.

I should probably add a yearly goal list as well and use those goals to drive some of my "to-dos" for each game. That way I'm working on improving what I messed up last game, and also working on my larger goals for the year.

Cool

Here's my goals for the season:

1) To give my partners the confidence needed to eject coaches without having to do it for them

2) To remember not to ask female players prior to tip off if they have removed all nipple rings

3) To work as many rec games with Dave as possible

4) To cut down on the sarcasm

I expect to reach numbers 1 and 3.
