i donated some time last weekend and one game was a 4th grade girls game.(clocked stopped on all whistles)it was kinda tough to call, i probably called a handful of the obvious travels ( the walking down the court)but i bet there was a hundred travels we didnt call that game(we just smiled alot)and what i understand there actually starting organized tourney bball for 1st graders (wow). kinda off the subject alittle but i think i would have to hold the and 1 players accountable to uphold the rules. seems were seeing alot of high schoolers doing the same tricks these guys are doing and cant understand why there being called for violations.

An assignor is a man or woman who decides a basketball officials fate!

I have been told by every assignor I work for how they want games called. What's the difference?
How many assigners have told you NOT to call travelling, palming, double-dribbles, taunting, swinging on the rim, etc, etc.

AND1 games are simply entertainment, like the Trotters, and are usually officiated that way.

Those guys are for entertainment ONLY and should not be taken seriously. Some of the stuff they do is amazing but it's all don to fill the seats and sell the videos. Those promoters are getting really phat and I'm sure their big name players are well taken care of.

Does anyone know what they pay those refs?

I am not disagreeing that the AND1 is more like globtrotters than anything else, but what is the difference between being told not to call palming, et al and to call something one way or another?

I received $100 per game, and perks, such as free sneakers, jerseys, and whatever gifts they throw your way. Plus, almost all the times you get free meals and all the Gatoraide your little heart desires.

It is funny that this topic has come up.

I went to a Globetrotters game last year with my 6 year old daughter. I knew going to the game that it is more entertainment then basketball but I could not get over that the refs were not "real" refs.

They walked up and down the court, did not get into position and only made a handful of calls.

Like I said I knew it was entertainment and not basketball but I just had a hard time with it.

As Mr. Annoying Grammar Guy, I usually limit my comments to the English language. But don't you mean to use "inter alia" here? I always thought that "et al" ("and others") refered to people. Any Latin geeks here?

Definitely not a latin geek, but as I recall it only applies to others (not just people)

Et alii - [literally, and others] and others; abbreviated as et al.

Inter alia may be better.

inter alia

SYLLABICATION: in·ter a·li·a
PRONUNCIATION: ntr l-, äl-
ADVERB: Among other things.
ETYMOLOGY: Latin : inter, among + alia, neuter accusative pl. of alius, other.

et cetera ("etc.") would be the preferred use.

But, switching back to Mr. English Grammar Person, "etc." should not be used. If the missing item(s) is/are important enough to warrant an "etc.", it/they are important enough to be listed.
