As Bob pointed out, case book play 10.3.5COMMENT states "The purpose of the rule is to penalize INTENTIONAL CONTACT WITH THE BACKBOARD while a shot or try is involved....". The purpose and intent of this rule is to penalize the intentional contact only, no matter what the result of that contact may be.
