I could really use some advise on tape analysis. I have about 8 games from this summer I want to breakdown and I could use everyone's experience here. If there is a 'scientific' way (or any good method) to break it down then let me know.

-Are there certain things you always look for?
-Are there any unique things that have come up in your pasts that help you with tape breakdown?

Anything that will help is appreciated. Thanks.

My method of viewing tape isn't very scientific - maybe because I'm my own worst critic and several things to improve on generally jump out at me immediately.

Mechanics: Are they standard according to the NFHS officials manual? Too fast? Communicated well to my partner?

Movement: Do I look like an athlete? Are my movements crisp and confident? Am I moving for a reason (to improve angle) or just to be moving? Am I anticipating the plays (but not the calls)?

Judgement: Did the game ever get too rough? Any ticky-tack calls I should have passed on? Any calls I should have made early (or earlier) to set the tone?

Demeanor: Do I look confident? Approachable? Relaxed?

What I look for when breaking down tapes:

Angles - am i in the best position to see my primary and the play?

Rotation - when could i have rotated earlier; when should i have stayed?

Straightlined - Why did i get straightlined and how could i have avoided it

Call selectivity - what did i miss and why

Consistancy - are we all calling the same thing as a crew?

hustle - did i get beat to my spot and if so why

communication - did i have good communciation with my partners, players and coaches?

clock awareness if you can see it

am i moving with a purpose

do i look like a referee - posture, run, reporting, ect

These are just a some of the things i can think of off the top of my head. I also don't look at the attaboys, but focus on the things to work on and fix.

Cool

When I analyze a tape, I look for the following:

1) was the girl's back blocking the good body shots
2) did the audio fully capture the rapture
3) is my mask on straight

Oh wait - you mean basketball tapes. Sorry - never mind.

I think this is the best advice yet.

Have a second set of eyes look for stuff. Stuff will be found.
