I know it's a T for a player to slap the backboard "when a try is in flight or is touching the backboard or is in the basket or in the cylinder above the basket". The rule book cite is 10-3-6. Isn't it also a T to slap the backboard at any time, except when it's part of a play? I can't find a cite for that.

It must be intentional. Everybody in the place has to know a player did this

Casebook play 10.3.5COMMENT- "A player who strikes EITHER backboard so forcefully it cannot be ignored because it is an attempt to draw attention to the player, or a means of venting frustration may be assessed a technical foul pursuant to Rule 10-3-7". It's not specifically noted in R10-3-7. Instead they use the generic preamble "A player shall not commit an unsporting foul. This includes, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO,.....". Strictly a judgement call.

I have two situations that are automatic for me when the backboard is slapped hard.

#1 - When the player dunking the ball slaps the board.

#2 - When a defensive player slaps the board on the opposite side of where it is being shot. I might ignore it if the shooter went up and under on the opposite side.
