error or inadvertant whistle

Team A has the ball in the backcourt when they call time out. They have 4 seconds left on the ten second count. When they throw the ball in, the referee mistakenly starts the count where she left off rather than gving them a new count, resulting in a whistle and a call of 10 seconds. Team A's coach correctly states that they should have had a new count.
Would this error be the same as an inadvertant whistle, with the ball going to the team in control, (team A), where it should be anyway? Would you tell the coaches that you have an error or an inadvertant whistle?

Might as well admit that you screwed up. Forget the 'inadvertant whistle"- that's lying, and both coaches will know that it's lying. Get BOTH coaches together, tell them that you made a wrong call and you're fixing it,then give team A the ball OOB for a new throw-in (and new 10-second count if the throw-in goes into the backcourt.

Great point for ANY argument, disagreement or screw-up, Dan. Say "this is the way it is" after you explain, then walk away and get the game going immediately. You may get a l'il bit of grumbling for a minute or so, but you usually avoid the tantrums.

You forgot the most important step - between 3 and 4, check for explosives underneath your car - quickly.

Thanks for the input. This messed up my partner who got mentally out of the game and wanted help badly. He got pretty nervous. I just went over to the benches, announced that "Team A should have had a new count, therefore Team A has the throw in with a new count". Sent my partner to the other end, and adminstered the throw in which was right in front of team B. Both coaches had no issue over it and I made one of those split second decisions I wonder about later, when I decided to not say either inadvertant (which would not completly be the truth) or saying error. The coaches knew, and my partner was already showing the deer in the headlight look. Everything went fine.

Let me throw a wrinkle into your thinking. Because you have definate knowledge, would you consider putting time back on the clock to the point of the previous time out and starting the sequence back over. Especially in a close contest in the last minute or so of the game. (This is a game management discussion.)

There's no rule available that will allow you to put time back on the clock. The clock wasn't started by mistake; it started properly. Even though the official made a mistake in blowing the whistle, the timer didn't make a mistake in starting or stopping the clock.

You wouldn't add time back on, even with the definite knowledge, because hopefully you will allow A to inbound the ball from the point closet to where you blew you wistle. Therefore if A is inbounding next to the endline, your partner counts 4 seconds and then blows the wistle with A 2 steps from the midline, then stop play take the ball out 2 steps from the midline and to account for the ball getting halfway up the court badabing 4 seconds are off the clock.
