Have you looked up the rule he referenced? It's pretty clear when you read the rule book why this rule needs to be enforced in this case. We don't like to do it, but we are bound by the rules and rule 11.2.4 is very clear (one could easily call it's meaning transparent) on this issue. Please, get a rule book and look this up. As Padgett says, rule 13.3.2 leaves us absolutely no wiggle room on this.
Coach.....they're messin with ya......

In the immortal words of one of the all-time classy guys, Charles Barkley, "I am not a role model"...my job is to go out on the court and T every coach, every game...I go out of my way to put myself on the table side of the court so I can mouth off to the coaches - especially the assistants - and then when they say anything back - WHACK!! Nothing I like better than to see that look of horror/shock slowly spread over the face of a coach... well, maybe the smell of napalm in the morning, but that's another movie...I especially like T'ing up a coach when they look at me funny - those are the best T's of them all...T'ing - and potentially tossing - coaches is what keeps me in my stripes and polyester pants!!!

[emoticon for mock indignation] Rockyroad, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Hey BBallCoach

If you can find an official's manual, it helps to clear up this picture. It lays explicitly why jokes from coaches constitute technical fouls. I can't remember where exactly, but it's right after the portion about good refs not allowing overtime. Once again, the passage is pretty transparent, much like rule 11.2.4.

The fact is there is casebook on this too. 11.2.4 Situation A (witty remarks about self or own team- no T) and Situation B (comedic comments about officials- T)

But the biggest secret we keep from coaches is discussed in casebook 4.45.1 (make up calls) shhhhhhh...

Yeah. We should be more like coaches -- scream, yell, and stomp our feet when we don't get our way.

What is that -- role models for 3 year olds???

It's a beautiful world where officials bait coaches into a T. An official makes a joke to a coach, smiles= no big deal. Coach makes a joke to an official smile=T hmmmm Ahhh the good old boy network double standard. I love it! Now I realize most of you became officials as a power trip and to help out your ego's but give me a break. Last time I checked no one has ever paid to watch a bunch of offcials attempt to run up and down the court, attempting to keep pace with the true reason fans show up the kids. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong and people are actually there to see officials and sports are not about the kids at all. Let me know! Cause on a board with this many Zeus's I would hate to be wrong. Ahhh maybe some day people will appreciate officials, but ahhh probably not!

I think that the standard should be that if the coach's comment is actually funny that he doesn't get a technical! Any way you look at it, NevadaRef's comment was funny!

Do you have no sense of humor?

I don't think many of us are in this job to be appreciated by others. I myself officiate because I love it. I love the game, and because I may lack some skill, I still want to be apart of it. I don't care if every coach hates me, I'm still going to go out there and do my job.

And in response to joking, I encounter some coaches quite often through the seasons, and some of them are fun people whom I will let get away with a bit of humour. A joke like the one that started this post is fine, but when the attitudes start to come out, its time to draw the line and give the warnings. I don't think i've had to give out a T for a misunderstood joke yet, and I hope i never do.
