Hey Ilya-

I would suggest you start officiating as soon as possible. I started when I was 13 and I wish I started a lot earlier. I am now 23 and love working basketball games. It is my favorite hobby. Summer is an excellent time to begin, very relaxed. I was fortunate enough to have a few senior officials that ran the summer leagues. So they attended all games and critiqued every game you worked. This allowed me to learn so much. After your next game ask one of the officials for the local assigners phone number. Maybe they have a mentoring program they can get you into. Even if they don't have you on HS level games you can get to know some of the officials. If you build some rapport with the right person you may find an invaluable source of information and someone that can "bring you up."

Good luck to you. I hope you find officiating as exciting as I do!

Scott

I wouldn't mind giving officiating a try this summer actually Do you know if i can do any kind of officiating during the summer in Portland, OR? (i'll be 15 by then )
also, do i like need to take some kind of tests or anything like that to be allowed to officiate?thx
I'm from Oregon too. No tests are required here. Our Association requires us to get "the tattoo" and then we go into a small room and have people yell at us and blame us for things we've never done. If we don't start crying or get mad at them...we pass...and we can officiate!!

Seriously, Mark Padgett's yer man!! Good luck!!

Ilya--

Way cool name!! Contact the Tigard-Tualatin rec program (use govt pages in phone book). They take refs as young as you, and they pay better than McDonalds and they have a little bit of training available. It's a great way to start off and with two or three years under your belt there, you will be ready to move up when you turn 18. You would also be welcome to join the PBOA (Portland Bball Officials Assoc) and pay your fee and take the classes. These classes would be extremely helpful and insightful to players and coaches as well as refs. If you wanted to join this year, call Howard Mayo right away: 503-244-4553. Or check out the PBOA on the web at http://www.pboa.org.

Ilya--

Welcome to the US! I"m always glad to hear about more diversity in the Portland area.

I'm not posting my e-mail right now because of some problems I've been having, but if you use the profile button on this post, there will be an opportunity for you to send a message. The e-referee board sends it to me without revealing my address. Then I can e-mail you back.

yes i tried that profile thing (i know all these vBulletin features since it's a lot like UBB), but i think the amins of the forum need to make some changes in a template.
instead of sending it to you, it sends it to a variable "$sendemailto". i'm guessing it's because the template is messed up, perhaps the variable is in the wrong place

ilya,

The $sendemailto will send the message to Juulie. It essentially uses this mask to keep you from accessing her email address without her permission. Try it, it'll work.

I used it yesterday to send her an email...
What it's supposed to say, after i send the email, is something like:
We have sent your email to ilya. You will now be returned to the thread.
But in this case it says:
We have sent your email to $sendmailto. You will now be returned to the thread.
which means the variable wasn't executed.
i'm a programmer myself
i hope the email was sent though, and it's just an error in the template..
