Mussina starts, the Yankees have the home field advantage thanks to Matsui, and they still give up 15 hits and 8 runs to -- the Devil Rays!! (Hmmmm, I seem to remember the Sox losing to the Rays on Opening Day last year. . .)
Course it doesn't help when your biggest big-ticket acquisition takes backward K's in his first 2 at bats, and also knocks your long-reliever (Quantrill) out of the game by running into him on a defensive play. Giambi didn't look bad, tho. I wasn't awake to see his 1st inning homer, but I saw his liner off the wall for a double. Of course, he let a lazy pick-off move go right through his legs on defense. . . Ahhhhhh, yes. First real baseball I've watched since the ALCS. Can we really call it "real" baseball, when it's played in Japan, at a time when nobody in either team's home market was awake to see the first pitch, in a dome that had all the atmosphere of a museum? Doesn't matter, I guess. It was fun to watch, regardless. :) |

But I cannot understand if this is so serious to you, why not go to the Baseball Board and make this post? Or do so on the "Off-Topic" Board as well? The only one that seems offended is you. Because a post was removed before of this nature and you had to make your "beef" public. I guess I do not understand what you expect? Peace |

You are so predictable. I am just having a little fun with you. But I do understand why folks would not want to read it and understand why the other posts were thrown out. But because it does not fit your narrow way of thinking, you have to draw even more attention to a trivial matter. Talk about baseball for 4 pages. The Red Sox just like the Cubs are just not going to win anything as usual this year. ;) Peace |

Chuck: I am not offended and while the major reason for the forum is to discuss in a scholarly and civilized manner basketball rules and mechanics, it is also a place for light-hearted banter and a chance for officials to communicate with each other about things that are happening in their lives. In my heart the two greatest sports are basketball and golf, I love to watch baseball (even more so now, that our two sons have turned out to become accomplished first basemen; best described as good fielders, but they need to improve in the batter's box). I took up umpiring eleven years ago and I wished I had taken it up long before that because after basketball I really enjoy umpiring. There are some people in this forum that are just old poops and really do not know how to enjoy life. The weather is finally starting to get better here in NW Ohio and I cannot wait to start playing golf. Today at 4:30pm, I have my first game of the Spring, a girls' H.S. jr. varsity fast pitch softball game and tomorrow I have a boys' H.S. jr. varsity baseball game to umpire. And yes, I agree that it is hard to call it baseball when two teams, neither of whom are the Cincinatti Reds are playing in the first game of the season, and the game is being played in Japan. Whatever happened to tradition. I was planning on being in Orlando for the IAABO Spring Meetings but I will now be in Hartford that weekend to officiate in the CT Starters' Girls' Spring Classic. The DoO usually has some officials from MA come down to officiate. If you are interested in officiating email me. MTD, Sr. |

I'm glad it's baseball season also. On a side note, I teach 5th grade and I don't do much for other holidays (Valentine's Day and such) so I'm doing a whole day celebration for opening day of baseball season. We're making solar ovens in science to grill up our dogs, we're practicing a reader's theater of Casey at the Bat, doing some stuff with statistics and keeping a scorebook in math and I have a person from the Bob Feller museum coming in and bringing some artifacts. If we have time we're having a screening of "The Sandlot". I'm really looking forward to it. We're actually doing it on April 8th (opening day of the minors around here) just because it fits into my schedule better. The best part is it gave me an excuse to order a new, personalized Cubs jersey! All right, my sharing time is over, thanks for listening.

[/B][/QUOTE]Amen! Cincinatti traditionaly had the home opener. It was almost a rite of passage. Kids bagged school to go to the game. It signalled that winter was over, and here comes summer. Great tradition! Then ESPN gets the opener. Now it's "Hey, we've got a great idea". Let's play the opener at 8:30 on a Sunday night. Kids are in bed? Ah, who the hell cares. We don't need new fans. A few years later, they get another bright idea. This one I can picture in my mind. Two ESPN pointy-heads sitting in a boardroom talking. One says to the other- "Say, Mort, we haven't pissed off all of the real baseball fans in a looooong time. Doesn't seem right to me. Any idea what we could do to take care of that?" Mort replies- "Tell you what, Moe.We got 'em good by making 'em stay up 'til after midnight on a Sunday night if they wanted to watch the opener. Why don't we take it one step further? We'll send 2 teams to Japan to open the season, and to make it even better, if the fans wanna see the game, they'll have to damn well get up in the middle of the night to do so". Moe sez- "Great idea, Mort. We'll do it. But we ain't sending no damn small-market team like Cincinatti. T'hell with tradition!" Agree with you completely on this one, Mark. |

I'm with you on the opening day shenanigans. Growing up a fan of the Big Red Machine, I consider it heresy that Cincy hasn't gotten the opener these last few years. |

I am also a Cardinals fan. Was raised closer to St. Louis and grew up with Cardinal radio and watching Cardinal games more than watching the Cubs in West Central Illinois. And they have the second most World Series Championship to the Yankees. And have been to the World Series more than the BoSox. All you guys had was 1986 and former Cub (sweet justice) Bill Buckner to lose against the Mets. In my lifetime the Cardinals went to the 1981 World Series, 1985 World Series and 1987 World Series. And in that time we won one of those that I got to actually witness in my lifetime. So if I die tommorrow, I will have seen more Championships from my teams than you have seen World Series games from the BoSox. And after this year, you will be waiting even longer. Did someone say Aaron Boone? :D Peace |

I am a Cardinals fan, because when I was a kid Ozzie Smith was my hero and I heard many of his games and where I grew up in Illinois is more Cardinal Country than any other team. Also one of the reasons many are Rams fans and they train in the town I grew up in. I hate the Cubs with a passion. I constantly wear Cardinal hats and gear around the many Cub fans I run into where I live just to tick them off. :D My hatred also goes along with the Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks and cannot stand University of Illinois in anything. The only teams and players I cheer for are the ones that come from Illinois, but it never hurts me to see them lose. The White Sox I am not a fan of, but used to work on the South Side of Chicago. I do cheer for them when they play the Cubs. And you have to pick sides when you live in Chicago. Half our Basketball Meetings are constant shots at fellow officials about the Cubs and the Sox fans. But I cheer for any team that plays the Cubs. The Twins took away my Cardinals chances from winning the World Series, I cannot stand the Twins!!! :D Peace |

It usually depends on what media market you live. The town I grew up in was near Quincy, IL where both the a NBC and CBS Affiliates are located. They spend as much if not more time on Cardinal games than they do with the Cubs. And where I lived is closer to St. Louis than Chicago. So depending on where you family lives, that is rather common. The further north you go, then you find fewer and fewer Cardinal fans. And when you come to Chicago, the Cubs and White Sox fans hate each other. You should here the radio programs and how the Cub Fans get mad at ESPN 1000 (White Sox Radio) for talking too much about the Sox. When the Cubs were on their run last year, there was all these Sox fans ripping the Cubs in the radio and even in the paper. I do not know if it is the same in New York with their current teams, but it sounds similar to what it used to be in NY when the Giants and Dodgers were there. It is about your "hood" and where you came from. It is very much like that in Chicago right now. Peace |
12-1 Yankees. All is well with the world, and Joe Torre lives to coach another day. Gets to fly back too, instead of having to walk.
Great interview by a Japanese announcer with Torre. He asked Torre if he liked playing games over there. Torre said that it was great except for one problem. An hour after finishing the game, they felt like playing another one. |

I'm not a big baseball fan but as I'm probably the only member of this board living in Japan I'd like to add a couple comments:
-Having the first games played in Japan might not have been the best for fans in the states but it was for cultivating more fans in Japan. It's a business and was a great business decision. Just like having the first NBA games of the season played here. -The Yankees loss in the first game was good to see. What might not have been reported in the States is that the Yankees lost the day before that (8-3?) to the Hanshin Tigers. As an American in Japan that was embarassing-but kind of worth it. -To add fuel to the Red Sox-Yankees fued-the Hanshin Tigers would be the Japanese equivalent to the Red Sox. Very popular team in the second biggest market in Japan. But almost always loses to the Tokyo Giants (the Yankees of Japan) [Edited by oc on Mar 31st, 2004 at 09:46 PM] |

Just a few observations: - Johny Damon's hair put on quite a few pounds over the winter, didn't it? Know what, Mick? The Tigers could really surprise this year. Fairly weak division, extra year in for the young un's, much better atmosphere and finally some hope. My roommate and I were pretty shocked when we turned the game on Sunday night. I did enjoy when the commentators put up 'before' and 'after' pictures and said that they weren't sure it was actually Johny Damon. |
From the Boston Globe....
Hair's Johnny: Damon shocks His appearance sets him apart By Bob Hohler, Globe Staff, 2/26/2004 FORT MYERS, Fla. -- "Bless you," Johnny Damon said yesterday as he entered the Red Sox clubhouse. "Bless you all." Heads turned as Damon, fully bearded, with his brown hair flowing to his shoulders, submitted one of the best impersonations of Jesus of Nazareth this side of "The Passion of the Christ." But no one knelt before him. This was just Damon after all, as colorful and unconventional as ever. Good thing he doesn't work for George Steinbrenner, who would promptly dispatch him to the barber. "[General manager] Theo [Epstein] told me I can keep it," Damon said of his look, one of the wildest in the game. "I don't think we want to compare ourselves to the Yankees. We'll do everything the opposite of what they do." __________________________________________________ ____ Based on the last sentence, I guess this means that they don't want to win championships, since the Yanks win them and the BoSox don't. Kinda taking it to extremes to not be like the Yanks. :) |
And what's with Pedro's fro? It looks like he stashed a poodle under his cap!
|
Quote:
[/B][/QUOTE]Hey, I just repeat what your Boston newspapers report. I kinda like this one where they talk about Manny's annual summer 4-day vacation to the Dominican. Of course, that's just an aside to the respect that they show for Pedro's professionalism. http://www.boston.com/sports/nesn/wi...blog/04_06_04/ |
Hey, Pedro was wrong. Nobody (except maybe Francona  ) is gonna deny that. And he didn't even pitch all that badly, except for the 2nd inning.
As for Manny, I think the writers like to find anything they can and blow it up. Anybody who can say something bad about him after he obviously worked hard in game 1 isn't objective. And the crack about his vacation cruise is obviously sarcastic. For some reason, Boston writers love to turn on Boston's sports stars and hammer them. Pedro gets frustrated and does something stupid, and on sports radio the next day, they're calling him the Dominican Diva. Wait, wasn't that Manny last year? Rick Pitino did a lot of really bad things while he was with the Celtics, but he was right about one thing. The negativity in the Boston sports scene sucks. Manny and Pedro have both been tremendous assests to the Red Sox, and both have let their professionalism slip at some point. Manny has gotten a lot better, I think, regardless of what the sports "reporters" think. We'll have to see about Pedro. He may already have decided that he's done in Boston, b/c they only picked up his option instead of giving him a new long-term deal. |
Quote:
As for Pedro, I hate to say it (and I said it last year), but he's beginning to remind me more and more of Ron Guidry. Absolutely untouchable for a while, but then the body gives out and the arm goes. I really can't see anybody, including Boston, offering him more than 2 years guaranteed, and certainly not at anything close to $18M per. Unless George does it just to piss Boston off. |
Figured I'd throw up the ol' AL East standings:
EAST........W.L...PCT...GB Tampa Bay..2.1....667..- Baltimore..1.1....500..0.5 Boston.....1.1....500..0.5 New York...1.2....333..1.0 Toronto....0.2....000..1.5 (Sorry about the crazy formatting) Of course, as a Red Sox fan, I'll be taking this post down come the All-Star break, but for now it's interesting to see that the Yankees are in 4th place in the AL East. Steinbrenner hasn't fired anyone yet? :eek!: |
One more note about Manny. . .
Hey, you see Manny run out an easy pop-fly in the second inning tonight? Deep fly, but no way was it going out. Center fielder goes back and . . . OOPS!! Lost it! Manny ended up on second. Of course, that's what should happen on that play; but Manny's taken heat for not running out routine plays. Not tonight, tho! Nice to see, for those who like to bash him!
|
Manny can't be a happy camper though, even though you'd never know it. He has to know that the Sox have been trying to dump him and his humongous contract. Same with Nomar. I don't think that the Bosox front office did the smartest thing by even acknowledging what they were trying to do with these guys. If you were Nomar, would you play hurt for a team that was trying to trade you in your walk year?
|
Quote:
Nomar's situation is a lot different. He wasn't being dumped. He was being moved to make room for (arguably) the best player in the game, who also happens to play his position. While that's not a happy thought, it's not like the Sox didn't want Nomar. They offered him a huge contract before last season, and he turned it down. Now he won't get anything near what the Sox offered him. Quote:
|
By the way, mick, how 'bout them Tigers!!!!! :D
|
Great line in Conan O'Brien's monologue last night: "It now costs more for a family of four to go to a Mets game than it does to go to a Yankees game. That's because you have to buy the tickets for the Mets game and pay your family to go with you!" :)
Gotta admit, not much charm to Shea when I was there last season. |
Terry Francona didn't so well in Philly, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, since he didn't have much talent on that team. But I hope Boston fans don't have this crap to look forward to all season: Francona put David McCarty -- a back-up first baseman -- in to pitch in the top of the 9th today. When the Red Sox were still within 3 runs!
Putting a fielder in to pitch is pretty much a sign that the game is over. Either you're way up or you're way down and you don't care if the guy gives up 5 runs; you just want to save your bullpen. I understand the Sox played 13 innings last night (and lost, sigh), but you can't concede the game when you're only down by 3! Great googly-moogly! |
I must admit that a "what the dexter" escaped my lips also. Should be veeeeeery interseting in the Boston papers tomorrow. :D

The Mariners finally win one!!! Hooray!!! At this rate, we will win 27 games this year! Should put us in contention for that elusive Wild Card slot, eh???
