How long?
How long after the second horn can he stay in the huddle before you "make things worse" and put the ball down? 10 sec? 15 sec? 20 sec? 30 sec? How about 45 sec? And now the coach goes to his next game and this scenario goes on and on! This is what happens by not "adding fuel to the fire" and what is your problem has now become the next game official's problem. Our inconsistancy is a legitimate gripe for players, fans and coaches.

While I'm sure some officials have had complains from... well .... someone, about not puting the ball in play because one team is slow to come out. I have had it happen one time from a caoch, who by the way was late to break his huddle. When he said something, I said, "not after you also being late". One time.... Its just not an issue with me. Maybe I've just been lucky. But, I'll admit, as a crew in all my games, I've yet, to get the point where I put the ball down and it effected the game. I do however thank all of you who have put the ball down. It sure has made my games easy to deal with this situation.

If we do things by the manual...
We should never have to put the ball down.First horn go toward huddle with 1 finger up,"First horn." We should stay there until they break,if they don't before 2nd horn, it is 2 fingers up with,"2nd horn let's go."
I have not put a ball down in 7-8 years,I've had to step into a huddle a few times, but that is all. |
