Check out the picture of Sebastian Telfair at the link below (2nd picture down). When questions come up about the hand position on the ball, and whether it is a carry or not, this would be a good picture to show as an example.

Of course, we're making the very likely assumption (for this photo) that this is NOT the start of a dribble.

What's funny is that I personally DON'T think this is, solely based on the picture. The hand isn't directly under the ball and the ball isn't resting in the hand.

Oh bull! Unless the defender put his arm through the small loop made by TelfairÂ’s arm you have a PC call here just as easy as you have a carry or whatever you think you have on the defender.

Mainly,I wanted to see if I could post the picture.

I'm trying to think of a situation where I could see that and not call it a carry. Nothing comes to mind. But, I'm not on the floor and you never know...

Maybe you could be too busy calling the handcheck, since you are refereeing the defense

Actually with me, your right Hawks Coach. That is more likely what I'd call here.

But as far as the picture of a ball at rest in a hand with the direction the player is moving, looks like a carry.

Without the last ten or the next ten frames, it's really hard to tell what's going on. There are three very obvious possibilities, carry, handcheck, and PC, depending on what comes before and after this little snap. There could also be a hold on the dribbler, if his right hand is in the process of grasping the defender's hand. And if this is the beginning of a dribble, and the left foot is the pivot, there could easily be a travel, unless he turns that ball over in a hurry. The defender probably doesn't have LGP, so he could be headed toward a block. This is a great action photograph, but it doesn't clarify much!

Hmmm...maybe if he was about to pass the ball?

Exactly...carry only occurs if he dribbles again, otherwise, it's just the end of a dribble.
