If you draw a line from the corner of the endline up to the corner of the free throw line,(including the semi-circle) and the ball goes out inside that area, the ball is inbounded on the endline. If outside that area, the ball is placed on the sideline nearest the spot where it went out of bounds for the throw-in.

cc, I might add that you draw parallel lines to the sideline to determine where on the baseline the ball is to be put in play. For instance, if the call is in the lane, you go just outside the lane line extended on the side of the lane where the violation or foul occurred. If it happened halfway to the sideline from the lane, you administer the throw-in halfway to the sideline from the lane etc. The officials manual has a diagram to illustrate where the throw in is to be administered. If you don't have one of these books, I suggest strongly you get one.

http://www.nfhs.org/PDF/2003PublicationProducts.pdf

Page 4 the 1s 4 listed

The Rules Book - "The rules that govern the game"

The Case Book - "How the rules ar applied to situations"

Oficcials Manual - " As an offical where should you be on the court/court coverage. The OOB placement. What each offial should do, when. Game Management"

Simplified and Illustrated - "A picture book covering the main points of the above 3." May be the best for really new reffs doing rec games without formal formal training and coaches.
