I dunno Mick. If you have a scoring controversy later and you had the home team's assistant coach sitting there "helping." Sounds like an invitation to disaster to me in addition to setting aside a rule.

Mick has an interesting point here. You have a scorekeeper who has already screwed up, you already have a scoring controversy, so is this really going to make it worse? What if you replace original scorer with the assistant coach? I would be more for that solution, where you bounce the incompetent boob that was previously attempting to handle the duties.
Scorer already represents the home team, so what are you really doing to harm the game? It would have to be clear that the assistant has relinquished all coaching duties. Where I live, the JV coach invariably serves as a third assistant, so the team could easily get by with the varsity coach and varsity assistant. Assistant coach is now a scorekeeper. To take this a bit further, you wouldn't have told the JV coach that he couldn't be the scorekeeper if he started there at the beginning of the game. But you wouldn't let him move to the bench and coach, nor would you let him coach form the table. If he adheres to those rules now, you may make the situation beter for the rest of the game. Now you also have the option of making the visiting book the official book. But something has to be done to unscrew this situation, becuase it is a mess that must be corrected if you are going to play this game fairly. |
