With all due respect, so I guess I had to do a State Final in my state in order to know what the officials go thru when they are there?

That is the dumbest logic I have ever heard. Some of us know people that work D1. I personally work for an assignor that is rather well known and works D1. Not only has he told me personally some things, he has shared many things about who works where and how you can get there. And that is just one official. Forget the others that I have talked to (not just me btw) that work D1 and talk about what they do and how the system works. So if you think that is being a smart-***, because we are sharing what is not only true but not a secret, sorry to disappoint. If you have another perspective, share it. But nothing that anyone talked about was not true. You do not get to the Pac-10 conference by just working the Pac-10. You might have to do a West Coast Conference or many other mid-major conference to even get consideration. Works that way where I live. You just do not walk into the Big Ten without doing the Missouri Valley or the Mid-Con, for example first.

Peace
Hey, Jeff,
Do me a favor. Don't big time me about your state championships...I wasn't exactly picking you out, anyway. My point was we had a legitimate fan who had a legitimate question and I don't think we should belittle him just because he's not a referee. I also have several friends that work or have worked DI, so that crap doesn't get you anywhere with me. I did not say anything bad about the PAC-10 guys, ou will notice. I'm just saying that just because the guy is a fan and not a ref, let's not ridicule him, okay?

My ears are burning.

Not that I care.

"Shut the hell up" shows a lot of class, by the way.

I have never done a State Final, but that does not mean I could not talk about what it takes or what the experience is like on some level. That was the point of mentioning anything about doing a State Final. Just because you have never done one, does not mean you cannot speak on how that is decided and what it takes when you are there.

Who was belittling him? If you have someone in mind that did that, address them. But do not try to tell everyone what the rest of us should say and not say. I know I gave a "legitimate" answer as to what he asked. He did ask for opinions and what others thought of the Pac-10 officials. If he did not want a response, why ask if we had heard anything about the reputation that they had?

He is coming to an officiating board, DUH!!!! If he asked an uneducated question, he is going to get the response he got. Do you want us to give the name and number of the assignor for the Pac-10 or Commissioner and have him ask that question? Because I am sure they will laughed him off much more than we will. Not only did he make claims that were not true, he does not even realize how the system even works. This is not an issue of who knows more D1 official more than the next guy, but when his question is obviously bias and obviously ignorant of how officials work any conference, he got the response he got. And if anyone comes here trying to tell us what officials across the country are thought of, I am sure he will get another response that is similar.

Peace

It was an interesting set of questions. On the whole, if you take into consideration all the responses, IMO, the answers he got were not only deserved but should have been expected.

If he was serious about wanting to be educated from another perspective, he should try to back off from some of his pre-conceived ideas and think through some of the more serious responses. If he does so, I think he has a chance of becoming a more educated fan of the game. Heaven knows the game (not to mention us officials) can use more of them.

Okay -- try this answer:

When the conference and / or the NCAA thinks it's a problem, it will be addressed. So, the fan needs to take his complaints there, or join the staff (not the officiating staff) of the conference, or recognize that his perceptions are different from those of the people "in power."

Living here in AZ and following alot of PAC-10 basketball, here is my impression of PAC-10 fans:

If you are a fan of any PAC-10 school but Arizona and Stanford, you think that the officials favor Arizona and Stanford because they are the "big dogs" of the conference.

If you are a fan of Arizona or Stanford, you think that the officials favor all of the other teams to bring your team down a notch.

I wonder which school BTTB is a fan of?

Not to stir the pot, but does your last post mean that a qualified official cannot also be a fan, when not officiating?

Cannot? No. But you would think that the humbling experience of officiating would make one less likely to be a "fan" in the sense that I am using the term.

I enjoy watching college basketball and like some teams more than others, but I don't yell at the TV about how crappy the refs are that "screw my team" and I have a huge amount of respect for the officiating ability of anyone that makes it to D-1.
