Cool

Had just about the funniest thing ever in my officiating career happen the other day.

Getting ready to tip off, one team in White, the other in Black. Several players from both teams are still walking out on the court, tucking in their shirts, shaking hands, calling out checks, etc.

I step towards the circle, and notice I have a White team jumper, but no one from the Black team yet.

"Okay, where's my black guy?" I ask.

"Right here." I hear over my shoulder.

I turn around, and it's the Jamaican point guard from the Black team - the only non-white guy on the court - who honestly thought I was asking where "the black guy" was.

Everyone bursts out laughing.

Then they tried to butcher each other for 40 minutes. Oh well, the first ten seconds were fun, anyway.

I've done one game once where Team A in the white jerseys was entirely African-American right down to the trainer, and Team B in the black jerseys was Caucasian completely. I felt off-kilter all night.

Talking "Brotha of another mother."

I had a football game about 3 years ago and worked with a guy that is white and happens to have my same last name. Well we were doing the first game of a double header and I am the Referee or white hat for the game. I was running the coin flip and was introducing the crew to the captains. Well my "brother" was the umpire and he was doing what umpires do and monitor the coin flip and right across from me. I intruduce my umpire and say to the captains, "this is my brother......Rutledge." There was silence and a pause. I say to the kids, I am kidding guys it was a joke, then they busted out laughing and had a kick out of it.

One of the funniest moments in my officiating career.

Peace

It always makes me laugh when players don't get the jokes.

That was good Jeff. That would have been great to have been there and seen their faces.

In my game Friday night the black team had names on the back of their jerseys. On one particular OOB play the ball was last touched by a black player and I correctly (of course!) gave the ball to white.

A couple of players wanted to protest and I was pointing out the player that the ball went off of, just when I noticed that his last name was "White".

So, I went for the smart *** comment and said "The ball went off White." and pointed to the player. The reply from one of the black team's players: "Ok, then it's black's ball!!!"

"No, your White."

He looked over, saw the jersey, and laughed.

Last Sat I was working a Grey (home) vs Blue (visitor) game. Blue coach requests TO as his player is about to get whislted by me for a 10 second violation. I immediately blow my whistle, yell, "Time Out - Red!, errr....White!, errrr... Blue?). The grey team did have red numbers at least and the blue team had white numbers . Coach smiled and said, "this aint the 4th of July yet." I hung my head and went to the low block....

Edited because I still can't get it right.

Did they bill this as "The Game of Northern Aggression"?

Now Chuck, don't you think we've got enough differing opinions on here that we don't need to bring up the civil war?
