High School Varsity / NFHS
Both teams have at least 7 team fouls. During a fastbreak layup attempt the L calls a foul on B1 while A1 is in the act of shooting. L signals two shots at the spot and when he reports at the scorer's table. He stays at the table and becomes the new T. I'm at C and was expecting two shots on the free throw. The new L, who is administrating the free throws tells the girls 1 and 1. The first shot attempt is missed and B5 gets the rebound. She is then fouled by A5. The new L blows his whistle and signals a holding foul on A5. The new T sees that two shots are not going to be given to A1. So he blows his whistle and says A1 was in the act of shooting and we are not shooting 1 and 1. How we handled it: We ignore the foul by A5 because it was a common foul and line up for the 2nd shot. Some of our fellow officials have said we should have: Reported the foul, cleared the lane and shot the 2nd free throw. Then went to the other end and let B5 shoot her bonus shot/s with players in the lane. What do you think??? Please give specific NFHS or NCAA rule ref. Thanks in advance!

#1, let me admonish your partner for using college mechanics in a HS game. Under NFHS mechanics, the calling official DOES NOT go to trail after a foul is called. He goes to center. Part of the purpose for that is so that he can indicate to the L, the number of shots. That's why the play was screwed up. Perhaps that's what they're doing in your area but it's what got you in trouble last night.
#2, when a correctable error occurs, you do not ignore the things that happened between the ewrror and recognition of the error. You can't ignore the foul on A5. The other officials were correct. "Reported the foul, cleared the lane and shot the 2nd free throw. Then went to the other end and let B5 shoot her bonus shot/s with players in the lane." The rule reference for NF is 2-10-5 but the rule is the same for NCAA. [Edited by BktBallRef on Jan 10th, 2004 at 11:40 AM] |

If there had been no change of posession in that situation, then you would shoot the second free throw with play resuming after the make or miss.
In this situation, clear the lanes, shoot the second, then go to the other end and shoot the 1 and 1 there.

Yea, I know we are doing the switch wrong. But our association wants the calling official to stay table side unless it is a technical foul. Then the calling official goes opposite. Thanks for your reply.
