I don't really care all that much about Rose, but I'll just say this from an "analysis" perspective. It was stupid to admit to it. The rules for the HOF are explicit: if you bet on baseball, you don't get in ever, period, end of story. So how does admitting that you did it bring you any closer to getting in? Almost as dumb as accepting Giamotti's "deal" in the first place.

Thumbs up

You guys are all wrong. Pete Rose was one of the best baseball players of all time. We gave Strawberry and Gooden many chances back into baseball. They did drugs. All Rose did was bet on sports. I think baseball and the world should give him his second chance.

Rose bet on baseball, not just sports. Rose bet on the Reds, not just baseball. As a manager, betting on your team (even to win) is detrimental to the game. Going to a crackhouse at 2 in the morning may be detrimental to the player, and even to the temporary image of the team/league, but it doesn't damage the integrity of "the game" itself. A manager is responsible for an entire season, and if he has bet on his team to win a particular game, he is going to be tempted to make decisions that are detrimental to the season in order to win a particular game.
Bottom line, this is not the same as a chemical dependency, or even wife-beating. By giving Strawberry et al a second, and third, and fourth, and fifth... chance, we assure that other players will deal with the same issues. If we give Rose a second chance, we assure that someone else will try it. What Rose did, if allowed to continue, would eventually remove all credibility from the game, and that's not acceptable.
Rose's timing is also suspect. He only has a couple of years left on the writers' ballot, and then he has to go before the veterans' committee to get to the Hall. No way in He## they let him in, juding by comments from a good portion of them.
I don't care that he admitted it, but I do care if he gets reinstated.

When you consider Rose is a broke (and broken) has-been with a new book & required book tour it becomes easier to see why he decided to 'fess up now. As for his deal with Giamotti - MLB had the guy on tape making bets (or damn cloe to that) apparently. I guess if I was Giamotti I might have offered him the deal he took or offered to hand the info over to the feds to look into. What other choice did Rose have?

Yep, you're dizzy all right. It's not a question of one side being right and one side being wrong. It's a very debatable subject.

Using drugs does not bring the prospects of cheating into the game that gambling does. No matter what he says, there will always that shadow. Did he do anything to effect the result of a game that he bet on?

If anything I think this "confession" should keep him out for good.

It is not sincere,it's about money,it's about Rose, but there is no remorse.

I think all you who say the other bad charecters in the game hurt themselves are right.Rose went to the core of the game and messed with its integrity.I agree with Tommy Lasorda who said if we let Pete in we have to go back and let shoeless Joe jackson in and look at the rest of the Blacksox.Don't let him in.
